We know that the charter of Hamas calls for Israel's destruction. They have stated that they will of course not recognize Israel nor negotiate with them. This has been written up in their charter for years. Their Prime Minister sitting in Gaza, Ismail Haniyeh, is trying to talk Fatah into rescinding their recognition of Israel. Their reasoning for this is that Israel objects to the Palestinian unity agreement joining Fatah and Hamas. Their reasoning is libelous as they have always felt this way.
At the same time, Haniyeh stated that "Israel's presence on OUR land is ILLEGAL and cannot be recognized". What he is stating is simply a lie that his people will probably swallow. Israel was created by every legal means, both by buying land and by its creation in the UN. It was not anyone's land at the time. It had been in the Ottoman Empire's holding who lost it by being a part of the Axis Germany's side in the WWI, thereby losing it and the result was the land "Palestine" was being overseen by Britain. The only "our" involved is that it is in the crossroads of humanity in the midst of Islamic people. It was a very neglected piece of real-estate that nobody had wanted or used for 2,000 years and now is seen as "OUR" land. Does it matter to anyone that it was originally Eretz Yisrael (the land of Israel)? Rome worked so hard to take it but then didn't do a thing with it other than give it this new name of Palestina. To the religious, it was land intended for the Jews and has been laid barren till their return.
Israel's Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman spoke with Catherine Ashton, Europe's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. He told her that Israel expects the EU to be cautious about the Fatah-Hamas agreement. He said that Europe should demand Hamas to comply with the International Quartet terms; recognize Israel, take out the clause calling for Israel's destruction , end the terror and honor past agreements with Israel. He also added that he wanted Hamas to allow the Red Cross to visit Gilad Shalit, Israel's kidnapped soldier.
If these terms are not met, the message to Hamas will be that terrorism pays off and there will never be a possibility of an Israel-Palestine Agreement. What will happen is that Judea-Samaria will be taken over by Hamas and missiles and suicide terrorists will be attacking Israel from the east side as well. Already there is this possibility coming from the north in Lebanon.
My feeling is that the Hamas-Fatah marriage will snub the EU expectations as usual. The EU will sit back and watch as usual. It will be up to Israel to defend itself as usual. The people hurt will not be Israelis but the Palestinians for again joining the wrong side. This can all take place unless the Palestinians have the insight to vote in their coming elections for a different sort of existence by voting Hamas out and peace in with Israel.
