Taliban Shoots Girl in Head For Wanting Education

Nadene Goldfoot
The Taliban in Pakistan is against girls getting an education.  Their terror organization may be the cause of Afghanistan's illiteracy rate to be 72% and Pakistan's to be 50%.  Girls are not to be educated according to them in secular schools.  So the result is that girls are not getting much of an education at all. Israel's illiteracy rate is 3% in comparison.

Malala Yousafzai, 14 years old,  was shot in the head and neck on purpose in NW Pakistan's Swat Valley on Tuesday. A few other girls were also injured.  Her father had run one of the last schools to defy Taliban orders to end female education.  In 2009 she documented her determination to continue school. When only 11 years old, she wrote an anonymous blog documenting her experiences for the British Broadcasting Corp.  She was on TV and became the voice for the rights of children in the area.

She was in Mingora on a bus full of schoolgirls who had just taken an exam.  This young lady had won a national peace prize last year.   To the Taliban she had become a symbol of Western culture.  They saw her behavior as obscene.  They say they will try to assassinate her again.

Girls' education in Pakistan is something banning people against the Taliban who are against it.  Militants have shut down schools in recent years to be defiant.  "Come on, brothers, be REAL MEN, Kill a school girl." Nadeem F. Paracha said through twitter.

It's backfiring.  The Pakistanis are outraged with the Taliban's actions.  She's now an icon of courage and hope.  Private schools were closed to protest against the Taliban's actions.  Everyone in Pakistan is condemning the Taliban's action.  The Taliban retorted with "We are dead against co-education and secular education."  They are so uncivilized that this is how they decide matters; shoot the child who spoke for it in the head!  Every other culture and country have discussed these very matters about education and come to conclusions they can live with.  They ended with "Whom so ever will do the same in the future as Malala will again be targeted by the Pakistani Taliban."

Textbooks in Arab Nations Loaded with Anti-Semitism

Nadene Goldfoot
Arab nations are notorious for using anti-semitic literature in their schools, promoting hate.  With this type of education, their people wind up hating Jews and Israel and are simply pawns in their country's fight against Israel's existence. This was found after the Six Day War of 1967.  Schools were full of racist and hateful portrayals of Jews.  Syria expanded hatred of Israel and Zionism to be teaching anti-semitism for all Jews everywhere.  They have been teaching  that Jews have a treacherous nature and that all must be annihilated.

The "Protocols of the Elders of Zion" is a favorite source of theirs.  In the Gaza Strip, UNRWA officials have faced threats from Islamist groups if facts about the Holocaust or any tolerance teaching is introduced into the curriculum, so this means that they are still frozen in their facts back to the 1940's when the Arab nations teemed up with the Nazis against Jews and were part of the Axis.  They have learned nothing but that they are going to finish what the Nazis didn't.  With Qaradawi's fatwa of killing all Jews everywhere, one can see that he's frozen in time and thought as well.  UNRWA is in a situation where they've promised to allow use local texbooks which are full of anti-semitism.  It is UNRWA who is responsible for materials used in the Gaza Strip and Judea and Samaria.  A good portion of UNRWA's money comes from the USA.

Lebanon, Israel's neighbor on the northern border, has a cabinet which includes members of Hezbollah, a terrorist organization.  They are actively fighting against Israel.  In Saudi Arabia was found passages describing Jews as "spawn of "monkeys and pigs'", but of course the investigator was told that the book is no longer in use.  I ask, if so, how was it that she had found it?  Saudi Arabia has been making educational curriculum materials for some time.  I remember seeing units from them years ago when I was teaching.   Offensive passages about Jews, Christians and women have been found made by them in Argentina and Pakistan already.

Hannah Rosenthal, former Wisconsin resident, is the State Department's envoy for combating anti-Semitism, and has had her hands full.  She found Arab officials balking at the idea of removing such hate literature.  Jordan's reply has been terse.  They have resisted any suggestion that Holocaust studies be introduced as a unit.  Their reasoning is that they are not teaching that it didn't happen.  They just are not covering it at all.  At this rate they will soon be in agreement with Iran in that the Holocaust didn't happen  because they don't know what happened.  One thing that has been found is the absence of Israel on maps in Muslim schools.  This is another way of not recognizing Israel as the Jewish State.  Instead, they teach that the cities in Israel are Muslim cities.

Supposedly there is an  organization to promote tolerance among the Abrahamic faiths.  Hannah found out that Judaism was not included in that group.  It only meant Islam and Christianity.

Britain has weekend schools in which 5,000 Muslim children attend.  These schools use Saudi Arabian national curriculum.  The textbooks are loaded with anti-semitism and the teachings of Sharia law.  In one book the students were asked to list reprehensible qualities of Jews.  They haven't been a part of Britain's ed materials inspection, but soon may be now that this is known about them.

The Qatar Foundation is providing finances to bring in Arab language teachers into USA classrooms both in elementary and high schools today.  They already are financing many university studies like Carnegie Mellon..  Portland finds that Lincoln High and West Sylvan Middle School have such programs.  Qatar houses Qaradawi, the head Muslim leader who has recently issued a fatwa to kill all Jews everywhere. He happens to be on the USA terrorist list and is not allowed into our country.  This doesn't say much for their material to be free of anti-semitism or lead to studying about religious tolerance and to lead to positive references about  Judaism.  People used to have scruples, but those seem to be flying out the window lately and are replaced by money.  What guarantees are there that Qatar's educational materials will be different from other Muslim countries and not teach anti-semitic ideas in their language studies?

The Debate Dance Over Education: Obama and McCain

Education Got My Goat
Nadene Goldfoot
I watched the debate tonight between Obama and McCain, the last chance for them to speak before the public and share their differing views before we vote, and I'm frustrated with both of them over their inept background about education.

I've been a teacher in the school system in the states for over 22 years, mainly teaching in Oregon, but I've taught in Idaho, Alaska and Israel as well. Your students are like cards you are dealt in a card game. You don't always get a good hand. Today you receive children that have either both parents working or are children of a working mother. Very few have the benefit of a loving mother at home seeing to all their needs, including education. As the children get older, they seem to have less respect for teachers and are harder to handle. Learning for many is not their goal at school; social connections are more important. Unless they know their parent's feelings about their education and what is expected of them, and what is not acceptable as far as their behavior goes, they are just attending aimlessly.

I've never known any of my peers that haven't given 100% of their abilities to be an excellent teacher. It's a matter of pride. We helped each other to improve. We have wanted our students to do as well as possible. We haven't been of the same ilk as some teachers I remember in high school who simply wrote something on the board for us to copy and then scooted out of the room. I had excellent elementary school teachers and sought for excellence, also. I'm not for any special monetary rewards for some teachers. It's up to a good principal to weed out poor teachers, and they have a chance to do that in the teacher's first 3 years. Experience and education should remain the reason for upgrades in pay, such as our system is working under now. So, gentlemen; take heed.

I get so mad hearing both McCain and Obama saying things like they would get people in to teach that don't have to bother with certification to teach! That is so ridiculous! In fact, I've seen people at very high levels in their field not being able to get across one fact in a school setting! Teaching is part acting, part entertaining, part being a policeman and part being a person full of all sorts of information. McCain would get soldiers into the classroom to teach after their service, without any training. Sorry, but that simply is a waste of our money. I believe I heard Obama say he wasn't very popular with the educators, and I have to agree with them.

The one thing I liked that Obama mentioned was that parents had to take on responsiblity to improve their children's education. I wondered at the time how he would put that across. It hasn't been working so far, unless there's a substantial reward system in the works that I don't know about, as he didn't elaborate on that. It should be a given that families that excell in reading and learning in the home would produce like children. What do we do about families that never read a thing, that spend their time with 6 packs as their intellectual outlet?

I taught in Alaska in a very posh neighborhood, where parents had quite a social life. They couldn't manage to always be on time in the morning to help their children get ready for school, being they were partying the night before, so I wound up combing little girls' hair to help them feel presentable. Neglected children aren't always in the poorest schools. These children were equally neglected, and almost for the very same reasons. In Oregon I taught children who also had a parent or two who imbibed too much. Their breakfast consisted of a coke, a bottle, that is. Often we had a police car at our school for reasons I never learned, but someone was in trouble.

Times had changed from when I was a little girl with a mother at home full time only worrying about cleaning the house and putting meals on the table. She joined the PTA and was there for all the meetings, and that became a social outlet for her. Besides that, she became a Brownie leader, so there she was in my school again, keeping an eye on me as well. She and my teachers talked to each other, and both knew what was going on.

So, Barak, you have said a mouthful with getting parents involved. I wish you well and wonder how it can be done. Perhaps children who receive a GPA in Elementary School can be rewarded somehow with points towards a scholarship for college. It would have to be tangible. Perhaps good GPA's could receive a morning at a movie theater as a reward; something the children would like, or a time at the roller rinks or ice rinks.

Other than education, I didn't go bananas over anything else that was debated. Each person had his turn to perform his dance, and it did seem to go better than previously. They seem to be informed about other issues quite well. The question remains if all of the voters have done their homework on the issues.

Saul Alinsky: Teacher of Community Organizers

Barack Obama’s Teacher, Saul David Alinsky
by Nadene Goldfoot

In either 1889 or 1895, Benjamin Alinsky immigrated from Vilna, Lithuania, now Russia, for the United States . He was a tailor. He was Jewish, 29 years old and headed for the Jewish community in Chicago, Illinois. He had met and married Hannah in 1896, a Jewish girl who was born in New York.

On June 8, 1900, I find Benjamin and Hannah Alinsky in Chicago in the 7th Ward. He was 30 years old and Hannah was 28. They had had two boys; Harry age 2, born July 1897 and Max 8 months was born in Sept 1899 or 15 Oct 1898. Benjamin was naturalized in 1910 and was then a citizen. Reading the records makes me realize how difficult it was for the immigrants to understand questions in English, as I keep getting some off-beat answers.

Later, I see that on Jan 7, 1920, Ben is still in Chicago, now 49 years old, and has his own tailor shop. However, Hannah must have died as he is now married to Sarah Rice who is twenty years younger than he is. She was also born in Russia. They have one son living with them; Saul D. Alinsky, born January 30, 1909. They were living on 12th Street or Roosevelt Road in the 13th ward. It makes me wonder if Hannah and her two boys hadn’t died in some accident or disease. This means that something had happened to them before 1908. Saul has spoken about how he was influenced by his mother, Sarah Rice, a great deal, so I imagine she was his birth mother. "She taught him that...individuals [must] be responsible for other individuals and that you can't just walk away when you see something that's not right."
"Then I found Max at age 19 registering for the WWI Draft on September 19, 1918. He was tall and slender, working as a timekeeper for the railroad.
Later, I find that Benjamin died on April 26, 1952 in Los Angeles, CA.

Education is vitally important to Jewish families, so Sol went to the University of Chicago in the field of criminology. He studied and was around the Capone gang. He developed his ideology and concepts of mass organization and work in organizing the poor which are internationally recognized, and felt that crime was born from being so poor. If anyone has read The Jungle by Upton Sinclair, you know about the horrific working conditions in the Union Stock Yards of Chicago of that era. When I read the book, I was horrified by the condition of our meat supply from the Chicago Stockyards, as my father was also born in 1908 and was a meat packer.
In the 1930's, Alinsky organized the Back of the Yards neighborhood and went on to found the Industrial Area Foundation while organizing the Woodlawn neighborhood, which trained organizers and helped in the founding of community organization around the country.

In 1971 he published his final work, Rules for Radicals. Then he died the next year. In that book he addressed the 60's generation of radicals, relating his views on organizing for mass power. He wrote," What follows is for those who want to change the world from what it is to what they believe it should be." It is said that Alinsky championed new ways to organize the poor and powerless that created a backyard revolution in cities across America.

Cesar Chavez and Barack Obama were students of his labor organizing. Alinsky was the subject of Hillary Rodham’s senior honors thesis at Wellesley College. She commented on Alinsky’s charm, but said that one of the problems of his model is that the removal of Alinsky dramatically alters its composition. She agreed with some of his ideas, mainly the value of empowering people to help themselves. She disagreed with his saying that you could change the system only from the outside. Diane Alden in 2003 called Alinsky a Marxist grassroots organizer. Others said, "He was a compassionate social reformer of magnitude and wisdom and brought together community groups to work with the socially aware churches."

He published "Reveille for Radicals 1946, 1969 and Rules for Radicals, a Pragmatic Primer for Realistic Radicals.1971. He was explaining how to be an agitator.

"The agitator's job, according to Alinsky, is first to bring folks to the "realization" that they are indeed miserable, that their misery is the fault of unresponsive governments or greedy corporations, then help them to bond together to demand what they deserve, and to make such an almighty stink that the dastardly governments and corporations will see imminent "self-interest" in granting whatever it is that will cause the harassment to cease."

"It is a fact that activist-cum senator Barack Hussein Obama started off his career as an activist with a position as a community organizer for the Developing Communities Project (DCP) of the Calumet Community Religious conference (CCRC) in Chicago. Both the CCRC and the DCP were built on the Alinsky model of community agitation, wherein paid organizers learned, in Alinsky’s own words, how to "rub raw the sores of discontent" stated David Alinsky, his son.

Therefore, Barack Obama has learned some of his very persuasive skills as a community organizer from the son of a Jewish tailor. He was only 25 years old when he started this position. Though Alinsky called his book or materials "radical," Obama simply read them. That doesn't make him radical or untrustworthy.
When he has talked about being a "Community Organizer," I had a completely different idea about what he was doing. I thought he was more like a counselor, helping people to get jobs or skills. I had no idea that it involved such ideas. Obama might become president of the USA, and Cesar Chavez supporters have been pushing for a major street in Portland to be named for him.
