How Israel Has Grown Since 1948

Nadene Goldfoot
Moses, born in 1526 BCE,  left Egypt at the age of 80 (1446 BCE) with 600,000 slaves to start anew in Canaan.  Those Israelites had seen the genocide of their newborn male babies by the Egyptians who were trying to stem their growth, and Moses was saved from this as a newborn by being hidden away in some reeds. That makes it 3,458 years ago that we had been freed from slavery and had set out on a very special journey of 40 years to get to our homeland.

In May 1948 when Israel was re-born through the UN the population was 650,000.  By May 1972 it had grown to 3,164,000.  1,400,000 were immigrants or as they say in Hebrew, olim.  Israel had 4 waves of immigration.
1.  Between May 1948  to the end of 1961, 754,800 olim entered Israel including
       a. refugees from the Holocaust in Europe, remnants of the Jewish communities in Poland, Bulgaria and Czechoslovakia.
       b. Entire Jewish communities from Arab countries including 121,000 out of 130,000 of the Jews in Iraq; 44,000 out of 45,000 of the Jews of Yemen, 30,500 out of 35,000 of the Jews of Libya.

2. Between 1955 and 1957, 165,000 Jews came from Morocco, Tunisia, Poland and other countries.
A large number of Jews from Romania arrived in Israel under a family reunification scheme.

3. Between 1961 and 1964, 215,056 Jews came, mainly from Eastern Europe and North Africa.

4. Since the Six-Day War in 1967 there has been a new wave of immigration from countries in North and South America, Western Europe and the Soviet Union.  By the end of 1972, about 200,000 immigrants had arrived.  My husband and I arrived in 1980 from Oregon. We were teachers who were set to teach English.

Jews had been living in ancient Jewish communities in Iraq, Yemen, Egypt, Libya for over 2,000 years and they immigrated to Israel, virtually ending the existence of those communities.  In several Eastern European countries, immigration removed what was left of the Jewish communities after the Holocaust.  Poland, Hungary and Romania where they had been a minority only have a handful remaining if any now.  This makes Israel the largest Jewish population next to the USA.  Nearly 700,000 immigrants, almost half the total-came as destitute refugees from Moslem countries.  This number matches that of the Palestinian Arabs who became refugees in 1948.

When the Jewish immigrants arrived in Israel the first thing they needed was housing and employment.  Israel was still an infant State dealing with heavy immigration in its first 3 years.  Most were housed in tents to start with called ma'barot-or tent camps.  They had to start by living on welfare grants or subsistence wages for work on public welfare projects.  Today they are taken directly to new homes or to absorption centers where they study Hebrew, which is what happened to me.  I was in such a place called an Ulpan in Haifa, studying to earn my credentials to teach in Israel, having been an experienced teacher in Oregon.

The problem Israel faced in those years was a cultural integration of half of the immigrants coming from Moslem countries in North Africa and Asia where most had lived in poverty and of a traditional and authoritarian Muslim society where they were 3rd class citizens or dhiminnis.  Another teacher in my school was from Iran where he had seen half of the male members of his family hung for being Jewish.   The other half came from Europe and America where their background had been of a modern democratic and technological society.  Today East is marrying West and things have worked out. In fact, by 1970, 18.5% of marriages were of couples of mixed cultural origins.    The results are that we have beautiful and intelligent people to be proud of.  Israel did it all by themselves with the help of grants and loans from the USA but never had to involved UNRWA.  They paid back the loans and integrated the people into the society.

Foreign Aid Supporting Gaza, Judea/Samaria In Trouble

Nadene Goldfoot
The Arabs outside of Israel of PA have been relying on foreign aid to support their population which has a $2 billion dollar annual budget.  Half of this annual budget's money comes from Arab donations.  Lately, with the Arab Spring uprisings, the wealthy Arab nations cannot donate the same amounts as usual.  The PA government is in financial trouble.

One thing they have been doing to improve their economy is to make terrific offers to their government workers to purchase apartments such as in Ramallah. Ramallah is 6 miles north of Jerusalem in Samaria.   Then their salaries were cut in half in June and people are facing a cash crunch.  The PA banks loaned them $200 million to cover their shortfall.  Now they again have a $35 million shortfall.

Many Arabs are now more concerned about having jobs and the economy than they are concerned about peace talks with Israel.  This certainly is an about face.  They are starting to sound like the rest of the world for a change.  I remember when the Israelis pulled out of Gaza completely and left perfectly good greenhouses for them to continue their businesses and they just destroyed them, not concerned about having jobs of creating businesses at all.

Like alcoholism, the alcoholic is not helped by the friend who supplies them with alcohol which is aiding and abetting alcoholism.  The Arabs living in Gaza and the other areas will never join the rest of the world while relying on UN Aid and Arab handouts.  It's time they thought of jobs and their own economy.

What money they have received must be going towards arms to use against Israel for Be'er Sheva was just hit yesterday with two missiles.  They can't be serious to think of becoming a state when all they do is attack Israel.  It's time to bury Hamas terrorism and join the Human Race.

For 30 years, the Arabs came into Israel daily to work.  One fifth of their population was able to do this.  It stopped in the mid 90's because they bit the hand that was feeding them.  The Arabs turned on Israel and attacked with rockets and missiles along with suicide bombers.  This has caused Israel to give employment to migrants from Thailand, Romania and other places instead.  That's how Hamas terrorism improved their living situation for them.

Israel and the Rebellion in Egypt and Other Middle East Countries and Their Literacy Rates

I've heard comments on TV of how educated the Egyptians are. As a retired teacher, I wondered about that. I found that Egypt's illiteracy rate according to the United Nations 2009 World Almanac, The Economist, shows that 28% are illiterate. The United States enjoys only a 1% illiteracy level. Even at that, we are having a terrible time with people out of work and finding no jobs. However, it does help to be able to read and write.

Compare that to Israel and we find Israel has only 3% of the population that are illiterate, and they also have more than 1 million Arabs. Everyone gets a chance to go to school.

Palestine is already on the list and the country has not been created yet. Does this mean Gaza and Palestinian West Bank cities? At any rate they have an 8% illiteracy.

Jordan has 9% illiteracy.

Lebanon to Israel's north has 12% illiteracy.

Syria has 19% illiteracy.

Yemen has 46% illiteracy.

Iran has 17.6% illiteracy.

The highest illiteracy level of the Middle East is Afghanistan with a 72%.

The results show that 774 million people in the world age 15 and over can't read according to the Global Campaign for Education. Of the Middle East, 68 million are illiterate. If they can't read, they can't learn about the world other than what they see on TV, and they have to have skills to get a job to have a TV. Skills are usually developed through education. Most of the riots happening in the Middle East are because of not having jobs and without jobs people have no food or transportation; all of which usually brings happiness and security.

What is worrisome is that illiterate people are more prone to falling for propaganda from people like the Muslim Brotherhood. The only way illiterate people can check an organization would be by word of mouth. It's hard enough to wonder if literate people aren't doing the same thing as so many never take the time to read much today.

While the Middle East complains of not having jobs, Israel has been the most active in the world creating businesses and rates #1 in being a start-up nation. The book, Start Up Nation by Dan Senor and Saul Singer explains this economic miracle of a country that only has 7.2 million and is just 62 years old has such an accomplishment. They have created more start up companies than Japan, China, India, Korea, Canada or the UK has. This has been done even with the fact that they have been surrounded by enemies and have been enduring missiles fired into their country.

It turns out that Israel has been a democratic country since the day it was born. Now it's in even bigger danger with Egypt rioting and the danger of the Muslim Brotherhood gaining control. They have already stated to prepare Egypt for war with Israel. Even so, our president Obama has already announced that their new government should include the Muslim Brotherhood.

With this, the Middle Eastern nations are reading in their native language. This is not including English skills. Being literate in Arabic and not English means they are reading only slanted materials. In Israel, students learn Hebrew and have a choice between Arabic or French, and all study English. To get into the university they must take an English test called the Bagroot. To pass this test most parents have to hire tutors for their children for extra help.

Saul Alinsky: Teacher of Community Organizers

Barack Obama’s Teacher, Saul David Alinsky
by Nadene Goldfoot

In either 1889 or 1895, Benjamin Alinsky immigrated from Vilna, Lithuania, now Russia, for the United States . He was a tailor. He was Jewish, 29 years old and headed for the Jewish community in Chicago, Illinois. He had met and married Hannah in 1896, a Jewish girl who was born in New York.

On June 8, 1900, I find Benjamin and Hannah Alinsky in Chicago in the 7th Ward. He was 30 years old and Hannah was 28. They had had two boys; Harry age 2, born July 1897 and Max 8 months was born in Sept 1899 or 15 Oct 1898. Benjamin was naturalized in 1910 and was then a citizen. Reading the records makes me realize how difficult it was for the immigrants to understand questions in English, as I keep getting some off-beat answers.

Later, I see that on Jan 7, 1920, Ben is still in Chicago, now 49 years old, and has his own tailor shop. However, Hannah must have died as he is now married to Sarah Rice who is twenty years younger than he is. She was also born in Russia. They have one son living with them; Saul D. Alinsky, born January 30, 1909. They were living on 12th Street or Roosevelt Road in the 13th ward. It makes me wonder if Hannah and her two boys hadn’t died in some accident or disease. This means that something had happened to them before 1908. Saul has spoken about how he was influenced by his mother, Sarah Rice, a great deal, so I imagine she was his birth mother. "She taught him that...individuals [must] be responsible for other individuals and that you can't just walk away when you see something that's not right."
"Then I found Max at age 19 registering for the WWI Draft on September 19, 1918. He was tall and slender, working as a timekeeper for the railroad.
Later, I find that Benjamin died on April 26, 1952 in Los Angeles, CA.

Education is vitally important to Jewish families, so Sol went to the University of Chicago in the field of criminology. He studied and was around the Capone gang. He developed his ideology and concepts of mass organization and work in organizing the poor which are internationally recognized, and felt that crime was born from being so poor. If anyone has read The Jungle by Upton Sinclair, you know about the horrific working conditions in the Union Stock Yards of Chicago of that era. When I read the book, I was horrified by the condition of our meat supply from the Chicago Stockyards, as my father was also born in 1908 and was a meat packer.
In the 1930's, Alinsky organized the Back of the Yards neighborhood and went on to found the Industrial Area Foundation while organizing the Woodlawn neighborhood, which trained organizers and helped in the founding of community organization around the country.

In 1971 he published his final work, Rules for Radicals. Then he died the next year. In that book he addressed the 60's generation of radicals, relating his views on organizing for mass power. He wrote," What follows is for those who want to change the world from what it is to what they believe it should be." It is said that Alinsky championed new ways to organize the poor and powerless that created a backyard revolution in cities across America.

Cesar Chavez and Barack Obama were students of his labor organizing. Alinsky was the subject of Hillary Rodham’s senior honors thesis at Wellesley College. She commented on Alinsky’s charm, but said that one of the problems of his model is that the removal of Alinsky dramatically alters its composition. She agreed with some of his ideas, mainly the value of empowering people to help themselves. She disagreed with his saying that you could change the system only from the outside. Diane Alden in 2003 called Alinsky a Marxist grassroots organizer. Others said, "He was a compassionate social reformer of magnitude and wisdom and brought together community groups to work with the socially aware churches."

He published "Reveille for Radicals 1946, 1969 and Rules for Radicals, a Pragmatic Primer for Realistic Radicals.1971. He was explaining how to be an agitator.

"The agitator's job, according to Alinsky, is first to bring folks to the "realization" that they are indeed miserable, that their misery is the fault of unresponsive governments or greedy corporations, then help them to bond together to demand what they deserve, and to make such an almighty stink that the dastardly governments and corporations will see imminent "self-interest" in granting whatever it is that will cause the harassment to cease."

"It is a fact that activist-cum senator Barack Hussein Obama started off his career as an activist with a position as a community organizer for the Developing Communities Project (DCP) of the Calumet Community Religious conference (CCRC) in Chicago. Both the CCRC and the DCP were built on the Alinsky model of community agitation, wherein paid organizers learned, in Alinsky’s own words, how to "rub raw the sores of discontent" stated David Alinsky, his son.

Therefore, Barack Obama has learned some of his very persuasive skills as a community organizer from the son of a Jewish tailor. He was only 25 years old when he started this position. Though Alinsky called his book or materials "radical," Obama simply read them. That doesn't make him radical or untrustworthy.
When he has talked about being a "Community Organizer," I had a completely different idea about what he was doing. I thought he was more like a counselor, helping people to get jobs or skills. I had no idea that it involved such ideas. Obama might become president of the USA, and Cesar Chavez supporters have been pushing for a major street in Portland to be named for him.
