Why Distrust and Contention Between Palestinians and Israel

Having served 6 years already for stabbing  killing an Israeli chocolate manufacturer, Sasson Nuiel.  Saeed is leading a good life in an Israeli prison.  

Hamas refuses to change their charter which is the same as Muslim Brotherhood-to destroy Israel and kill Jews.  Both Fatah and Hamas refuse to recognize Israel as a Jewish state.  They've refused offers of their own statehood for the past 66 years and just now declared it without any peace accord with Israel.  It's taken them only one week to commit acts of destroying Israel with continued rocket attacks from Gaza and now a kidnapping of 3 Jewish teenagers.

Israel's prisons hold about 5,000 Palestinian terrorists.  Hundreds are serving life sentences for murder.  The Palestine authority run by Abbas sees them as heroes for fighting against Israel.  The murderers get extra attention and honor.

The PA sees kidnapping as a legitimate act that will bring about the release of these terrorists.  What Israel's neighbors would do to people who would terrorize them would be to kill them.  Instead, Israel puts such people in prison.

In fact, the PA encourage Hamas to kidnap Israeli soldiers and hold them hostage for the reason of using them to exchange prisoners for release.  This was stated by the Deputy-Secretary of Fatah's Central Committee, Jibril Rajoub, a senior PA official on January 2, 2014.

PMW, Palestinian Media Watch keeps an eye on such goings on.  On October 24, 2011 Abbas said on  the official PA TV that Hamas kidnapped a soldier, Galad Shalit, and managed to keep him for five years, and that's a good thing.  The a week later on October 30, 2011, his representative, Rajoub said that "We salute those who dug the tunnel to kidnap Gilad Shalit;  we salute those who captured the captive, Gilad Shalit, and salute those who guarded the captive until this deal was completed.
                                                                             
Abbas said  on October 6, 2009 on their official TV program that "We have 11,000 prisoners.  We will definitely, always and forever, act to free them using all means."  Notice that they never tell them not to attack Israel to keep them out of prisons, but they instigate and encourage them, then promise to get them out.

This year on January 2, 2014, Rajoub said that "if Hamas wants to kidnap soldiers...we encourage them.  When they kidnapped Shalit we congratulated them.

Just this April 16, 2014 on their Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas promised that "The kidnapping of Israeli soldiers.....will continue.

Since they became a recognized Palestine a week ago, Hamas has been busy talking up recruits from Fatah to join them in attacking Israel.  They now are connected and can reach Judea-Samaria because of this recognition.

A week ago the USA recognized Palestine, followed by the EU which goes against Israel's expectations of a peace accord first.  This terror state could only wait one week before they are actively committing this act, even though they had promised Kerry and Obama to distance itself from terror.  This is an act of terror.  To rub salt in Israel's wound, they continue to glorify terrorism and promote kidnapping Israelis as hostages.

Their comments have been, when hearing of a kidnapping, "That's a good thing.  We don't deny it.  On the contrary, it's good because in that small strip of 40 X 7 km (Gaza) , they managed to guard Gilad Shalit and hid him- that's a good thing.  This was heard on October 24, 2011's TV program.

Two years earlier Israel had released 20 female terrorists in exchange for information about Gilad.  The Palestinians took this as hope to use this method to free 11,000 more and this is but one of many means they are ready to use.

Why are there so many Palestinian prisoners in Israel's prisons?  "It is a fact that over 1,000 Israeli civilians have died as a result of suicide bombings and other terrorist attacks since the beginning of the conflict (most of them during the Second Intifada between 2000-2005*), but violence and terrorism is far from the whole story.  Since 2001 southern Israel has been peppered by rockets, missiles and mortars from Hamas' terrorists.  This is true terrorism.  

First Israel suffered from suicide bombers in the 90's.  Palestinian militants first employed suicide bombing as a terrorist tactic then.  Some are in prison for throwing rocks at Israelis.  In September 2000, the 2nd Intifada started and went on till February 8, 2005.  The bombing is southern Israel has never stopped but continues today.

Columnist Richard Cohen wrote that "The Arab world is the last bastion of unbridled, unashamed, unhidden and unbelievable anti-Semitism.  Hitlerian myths get published in the popular press as incontrovertible truths.  The Holocaust either gets minimized or denied, as Iran does.  ....How the Arab world will ever come to terms with Israel when Israelis are portrayed as the devil incarnate is hard to figure out.  

I have news for Richard Cohen.  anti-Semitism has mushroomed again all over the world.  He's right in blaming the Arabs, for they have fed the propaganda and lead the charge, though.  Of course, not every Arab feels this way.  We do have supporters from them as well, but when those against us have given false testimony against us such as anti-Semites of yesterday, again they are being listened to as seriously as those reading their bibles believe in that.  
                                                                         

  
What is it like in an Israeli prison?  Israel's prisons are closely watched by the whole world.  One reason is that the government has allowed representatives of the Red Cross and other groups to come regularly to inspect them.  Does Iran allow this?  A relative of mine was imprisoned there on her vacation for buying some little chatchka from a pesky salesman.  She was in there for years, and had to cook her own food.  Prison is not a hotel, and shouldn't be a pleasant place for anyone, but these prisoners are being paid by Hamas for their acts, which causes more to become terrorists.  

Israel is not allowed to arbitrarily arrest its citizens.  Defendants are innocent until proven guilty, just like the USA.  They have the right to writs of habeas corpus and other safeguards.  Israel doesn't jail political prisoners like Russia has.  Israel keeps an independent judiciary.  

Israel was born in May 1948.  Years ago, some Arab prisoners who were suspected of participating in acts of terrorism were interrogated that one could call severe methods.  They were criticized as using excessive methods and their Supreme Court issued a landmark ruling in 1999 that prohibited the use of many of the practices that they considered abusive.  The USA went through the same steps.  We've all heard about how USA police used to use the rubber hose.  

Israel never has had the death penalty.  Only once, when Adolf Eichmann was condemned, has it been used.  He was the man  most responsible besides Hitler for the "Final Solution" to kill all Jews in the world.  No matter what the Arabs have done, and some cases are too ghastly for me to even write about, have they decided on the death penalty.  

Prisoners get to mingle with each other, throw parties and study for advanced degrees.  they can stay in touch with their fans on Facebook using their 3G mobile smartphones.  Life is more like a vacation.  They just don't get to have bagels and lox, that's about all.  They even get a salary from the PA, even Hamas terrorists.  The money comes from American and EU taxpayers.  10% of the PA budget pays salaries of prisoners and benefits to their families and families of terrorists who weren't lucky enough to end up in prison but who tried to shoot it out.  So they eat very well.  The Jews they murdered have families who don't eat as well.  This is how  $100 million dollars is spent on benefits for terrorists.  How could any government fall for their words that they oppose terrorism when they are subsidizing the terrorists which the instigator and they go on aiding and abetting terrorists ?  

Knowing all this, Kerry and Obama's government tried to force the issue and demanded that Israel bend to their wishes to accept a Palestinian government.  Oh sure, Israel must be the only little state in the world who would just love to have the killers of their families be allowed to profess their statesmanship, a position that gives them extra rights in the world---to accomplish their goal of doing in Israel.  No way does it spell out a psychological change of their hearts.  If anything, this has given them fuel to steam ahead with their goal---with the slipshod promise to Israel that they will keep their eye on the Palestinians.  It's only gone from bad bad bad to worse and worst.  

Now Israel has to watch the west which is Gaza and the east which is  Judea-Samaria, both only a few blocks away from their own homes. All the while Israelis have to watch what's happening in the north where thousands of missiles lie pointing at them from Syria and Lebanon.  Somebody must think that I'm ready to buy the Brooklyn Bridge.   We know the whole world watches once in a while, but nobody cares anything about Israel's enemies who are out to destroy them.  That's because they are under a subtle attack themselves and are morphing into the same thing.  

Human rights groups are just as much at fault of the situation.  They condemn Israel every moment with unfounded accusations which has caused Israel to bend over backwards to show how well it treats Muslim terrorists.  IDF is under the same rules of engagement as the USA which are causing serious US casualties in Afghanistan.  Those in charge of Israeli prisons are allowing the terrorists to post propaganda on Facebook from the prisons!  In their defense, it could come from not being able to read Arabic, for I'm sure it's not in English.  

Human rights groups even are as one-sided that they describe Gaza as a prison.  They have free electricity and free water supplied by Israel because they have not paid their bills.  While Israel is carefully measuring out their water use, Gaza has opened up a water park.   Tell CNN and BBC that they are full of prunes in their reports about how awful Israel is.  Their prejudice is showing.  The newspapers are just as bad so they get money from them.  

1700 Iraqis have just been murdered by ISIS who are about 30 miles from Damascus now.  Yes, the world is in good shape and it's all Israel's doing according to many.  No wonder Israel finds it difficult to trust a terrorist state that has just been accepted by the US and EU.  Thanks buds.

Portland School Faces Anti-Semitic Presentation on Heels of UNESCO Accepting Palestine

Israel had to go along with the demand that they release 1,000 Arab prisoners that they held; many of which were mass murderers of many Israelis in order to get one IDF soldier back, Gilad Schalit.

The war going on is one of the so called "Palestinians" raining Israel with rockets, missiles and mortars which fall in residential areas. For a long time Israel did not retaliate, held back by the USA's guidance, but now after seeing that this has not stopped it but instead has encouraged the attacks, have decided to react everytime they are bombarded and their air force pin points targets of terrorists engaging in the shootings.

In his speech after the release of the prisoners, Abbas praised them, referring to their prison terms as:

"...enforced absence which was imposed on you because you are people of struggle and Jihad fighters for Allah and the homeland... Your sacrifice and your effort and your actions were not in vain. You acted and struggled and sacrificed."[PA TV (Fatah), Oct. 18, 2011]

While Israel is a state accepted by the UN in 1948, it has national issues to deal with such as the economy, job, housing, and national security. They have to do all these things we do while half of their country is under attack from missiles, mortars and such. We use umbrellas in Portland to protect us from the constant rain. That doesn't work in southern Israel for protection from missiles. The population has 12 seconds between a siren of warning of incoming missile and getting to a bomb shelter. One of the new industries that has developed are portable bomb shelters for the schools that had none.

All the while, we see the "Palestinians" and their Muslim cohorts such as Syria and Iran and others plot and scheme to destroy Israel as they will not even accept a Jewish state in their Muslim midst. However,

"The Arabs cannot say that the Jews are driving them out of their country. If not a single Jew had come to "Palestine" after 1918, I believe that the Arab population of Western Palestine today (over a million in 1938, would still have been around about the figure at which it had been stable under the Turkish rule."

Thus, the territory known variously as "Palestine," as "South Syria," as "Eastern and Western Palestine," or as part of "Turkey" had been designated by international mandate as a "Jewish National Home," concerning which the United States declared that this be established...that the Jews be invited to return to Palestine and settle there....and assured that it will be the policy of the League of Nations to recognize Palestine as a Jewish state as soon as it is a Jewish state in fact. England can be relied on to give the Jews the privileged postition they should have without sacrificing the religious and property rights of non-Jews.

Do we see the UN upholding the League of Nations' decisions in regards to the Jewish state of Israel? Do we see respect for Israel as a Jewish state that is accepted by the members of the UN? There are 47 countries that have a majority of Muslims yet they cannot accept one Jewish state? Christianity has 120 countries including the United State that are of a Christian majority. 16 nations make Christianity their state religion. That the one Jewish state in the whole wide world is being attacked constantly without anyone stepping up to the plate and saying STOP ATTACKING ISRAEL OR ELSE does make me feel that there is a huge amount of anti-semitism still going on in the world.

In the day and age where we have a body of supposedly superior people keeping one country from being picked on by another and they stand by and just let it happen, and then have the chutzpa to reward the bombers with admission to their group anyway is just simply appalling! The UN has long lost the purpose of its creation.

So what is happening Friday at Lincoln High in Portland, Oregon? A teacher has invited a Palestinian hip-hop group, DAM, who will be presenting to certain classes their very extremist views depicting Zionists as racists using videos they have on their website. They are there to spread their message of violence and hate. Parents and adults in the Jewish community are most concerned. This is the only perspective that will be represented.

 The question now remains of allowing guest speakers who promote messages of violence toward any group to do so in a public high school. There is no balance here. Lincoln has a history of having Jewish students in attendance, being they were very close to the older Jewish Community Center and the Jewish neighborhood of South Portland. Anti-semitic activities happen in Portland, and the "Occupation Portland as well as Occupation and demonstrations against Wall Street all over the USA have seen their anti-semitism involvement already. Now this "lesson of violence" on teenagers.

If the teacher is trying to show absurd negativity and what it leads to, she may need help. In the late 70's I was invited to speak to a class of college graduates working on their masters' in business at Boise State University about how Jews feel about phrases such as "Jew you down." One of the students was my friend and this was his presentation. When I as nicely as I could explain why I, a professional elementary teacher didn't like it, they almost attacked me! The professor, a male, could hardly get back any control. They were incensed to think that their favorite saying was an affront to us! I went home in shock and most disappointed in the future business community of Boise!

Paul Shapiro Spoke at Genealogy Meeting on Opening the Archives of the International Tracing Service

On Wednesday, October 22, I went to the Mittleman Jewish Community Center for our genealogy program of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Oregon to hear Paul Shapiro from Washington DC speak, a man who fought to open the archives holding 23 miles of records of holocaust victims. The program was co-sponsored by the MJCC who gave us the Chapel for our meeting.

In the program Paul Shapiro talked about a boy born in 1930. This kid's name was Mickie Schwartz, a Hungarian Jew who at age 14 was arrested on April 16, 1944 and taken to Auschwitz, then later to Buchenwald. Young boys had small hands, and they were labor used in underground building places making some kind of weapons. Elie Weizel was one of the boys. They were saved by communist prisoners who wanted to rescue these boys. The reason he lived to tell the tale is because this was so close to the end of the war, and they were used for their labor at this point. His mother was captured and gassed as soon as she had come to the camp. Mickie was all alone.

The record-keeping of the Germans was just amazing. They wanted the world to know how they did it all. You wouldn't believe the records they kept. They even kept records of the lice in the scalps of some prisoners and how big the lice was: small, medium or large.

You could tell by the last names as to if prisoners were Jewish or not. At least Paul and the audience could. There were other people that were prisoners and murdered also. One guy was a Mongolian from Russia (?) who was an engineer and knew how to build bridges. He died in the camps because many countries (including the USA) would not accept him because of his race. He was not Jewish. Of course Jews couldn't get out at all.

In the audience was Portland's youngest holocaust survivor. She was 71 years old and looked very very good. She's never known what has happened to her family. I saw her being interviewed afterwards by my friend from the Jewish Review, who took pictures. Paulina Olson had a tape recorder and had the lady speak into it for the interview. I was sure lucky that I was born here, or I would have been one of those unlucky ones in the gas chambers. Most survivors are around 80 or more years old today, and there's very few left. All this time, ever since 1945, they've never known what happened or when or where their family died. Through this archive place, they found out for one survivor that his dad didn't die in the gas chambers. He lived to see the Americans liberate his camp, then died 10 days later from starvation. Now his son saw a card with the date of his dad's death on it, which was important to him to be able to say kaddish. ONLY, the man is now old and in a wheelchair and his son was afraid to tell his father that they found out about the grandfather, as the shock might kill him.

Well, this was one program that I didn't fall asleep in. It was worth the hour's drive there to attend. I must say, that this Paul Shapiro fought about 13 countries including our own USA practically to get the archives to be opened. He fought ever since 1991. They just got them about 2 years ago. It took Greece, home of democracy, to say that they had to vote to open them up. What a story. It seems that Germany really didn't want them to be opened.

The ITS archives are located in Bad Arolsen, Germany. It was started by the Allied powers after WWII to help trace missing family memebers and reunite families. The sad thing is that only now are the archives opened. This means that family members had never really found missing members. The archive now holds about 50 million digital images on 17.5 million people arrested, deported, killed, forced into slave labor or displaced from homes to where they could never return.

Paul spends most of his time traveling and speaking about the center now. He has a BA degree from Harvard U in government, a Master of International Affairs and Master of Philosophy in History from Columbia U. He was a Fulbright scholar, and IREX scholar, and a visiting Fellow at the Institute for Eurasian Studies at George Washington U. We were lucky to have him speak to us. I believe that it took all those degrees, and his ability to talk to all the different involved nations in the process of opening these files, to have success. Without him, they never would have been opened.
