Knesset Member in Portland

Nadene Goldfoot
The Portland Jewish Federation was privileged today to have MK Yariv Levin, the Chairman of the House Committee of the Knesset visit.  A breakfast meeting was called so we could hear this young lawyer's views on what was happening in Israel.

Yariv mentioned that we have a birthright to Israel as well as a strong historical right.  Enemies of Israel are trying to erase these facts with their people. We are not occupiers.  This was and is our land.   Hopefully, we will have peace among our different people.  This could happen before peace comes between  the nations.

Israel wanted peace so badly and have such a regard for life that they gave the Sinai to Egypt in return for peace, which worked as long as Sadat and Mubarak were rulers.  Now  with the Arab Spring, one can worry as the gas lines in the Sinai bringing gas to Israel and Jordan have been attacked 3 times and Israel's ambassador and staff have been ousted in Cairo.  We gave up the Gaza Strip just to see it taken over by Hamas terrorists, so that again didn't work out  in the name of peace.  Israel will have to be less "giving"  in their need for peaceful neighbors from now on.  I personally don't think we'll see Israel as an easy mark or a patsy from now on.  They're gaining strength from their bad experiences.

The term, "settlements" was brought up.  Yariv explained that towns and cities are just experiencing continued building as needs arise.  Right now there is a huge need for housing as a recent demonstration in Tel Aviv let this be known.

It should be explained that most all Israelis live in apartment houses.  I was lucky to have two friends in Safed who actually had houses.  I myself lived in the bottom of a 13 floor apartment building and had bars on all my windows for protection from terrorists.  Most likely apartment buildings are being created as new housing.

The question about September 22nd when the Palestinian Abbas will go to the UN in an attempt to create a Palestine was discussed.  The affect of this may create a huge march of possible unarmed Palestinians into Israel  illegally  which is itself a threat.  The IDF will be prepared and will do everything possible to protect life, including their own and their citizens.

Turkey was brought up.  I had not realized Turkey is such a superpower within the Muslim nations.  They have not accepted the ruling that Israel was in the right when they invaded as part of an invading flotilla and their people attacked ours.  Now they threaten to send their navy with the next ship.  Hopefully there won't be anymore.  It should be noted that Turkey recently was turned down as a full fledged member in the European Union.  The earliest this could happen is 2013 but may take as long as till 2021.   Perhaps they are making a statement of how important they are.  As events have changed, Turkey and Iran had been long term friends of Israel under different political regimes.  With today's polital group turning more towards the Muslim Brotherhood, I would think this should be more of a disadvantage to belonging to this union.

We have had peace with Egypt from Sadat which was carried over by Mubarak honoring the contract, but now that he is overthrown, we see the people not in agreement.  Iran's people are good people wanting peace but their government is not of this mind at all and has threatened Israel's life with possible atomic destruction.

Jordan was discussed and we wonder how it would deal with a Palestine next door. They're having their own problems  with the surrounding "Arab Spring."  Hopefully they would rather have things as they are right now knowing that Israel is a peaceful neighbor.

I did not realize how many people  from all over the world do go to the Knesset to visit and discuss matters, but they do have constant communication face to face with many.  Yariv said that the Maronite Christians and the Druze are good friends of Israel and hopefully conditions for them are improving as they are deserving people.

What Oslo Accords Said About Declaring a Palestine

Nadene Goldfoot
                           House of Representatives of USA

The Oslo accords concerning the Arab "Palestinians" and Israel were signed by both the USA and European countries.  It said that there would be no lateral steps allowed by either the Palestinians or Israel.  Peace was to be negotiated between Israel and the Palestinians.  By going to the UN on the 21or 22 of September, Abbas is breaking the Olso agreement.

For a counter measure,  Israel may be able to annex Judea and Samaria (called the West Bank).  This has been suggested by Knesset member Danny Danon as a "day after" plan. He suggests annexing area C which holds major Jewish cities and towns plus rural lands.  It does not include the largest Arab communities.  All of Jerusalem is a part of Israel.  David Pollack found in a survey that 40% of Arabs there would move to stay under Israel authority if East Jerusalem ever came under "Palestine" rule.

The reason Israel has not wanted to do this in the first place is that they need to maintain a  Jewish majority in their state as that is why Israel was created in the first place.  Since we lost Jerusalem in 70 CE, we have been homeless.  We were called the wandering Jews; a name even for certain plants.   The Holocaust showed the leaders that there was a huge need for our own state as we have been scapegoats long enough for other countries.  We've had dhimmi status in Arab countries and do not want this again, as well.  Right now Israel has 1,571,000 or 20.4% Arab citizens already.  The total population of Israel as of May 2011 was 7,746,000  with 5,795,000 Jews.  That's pretty close to the 6 million Jews lost to the Holocaust of 1936 to 1945, not to mention that Moses arrived outside the wall of Canaan with 601, 730  thousand Israelites from the Exodus to start with.

The idea is backed by The USA's Joe Walsh, a member of the House of Representatives.  He feels that this breaking with the Oslo Accords by Abbas is an affront and that Obama should be very strong against it.  If he can't do this, the House of Reps should show a backing of Israel  this way.

September 21st Palestinian Proposition at UN for Statehood

Nadene Goldfoot
One hundred people marched to the UN headquarters in Judea/Samaria Thursday asking for the support of Ban Moon at the UN headquarters in New York.  The UN Chief Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon thinks a Palestine is long overdue and is  thinking that this will suddenly create two states living side by side in peace and security.  To me this shows that he has no idea of what Hamas's charter is saying about Israel. Don't these UN people read up on what is going on?  If this was a surity that these two states would live side by side in security, Israel would be the first for it to happen, but we know it is not happening at this point in time.

If the USA vetoes their request like it has promised, in the Security Council,  Abbas has said he will go to the General Assembly and will win promised votes there.  This will upgrade their status to a non member state which he has said he will not settle for.  It would put him on par with the Vatican.  Then they may be able to bring claims against Israel in the International Criminal court.  This of course makes further peace talks more impossible.  I would think that Israel should be able to do a turn about and sue the Palestinians for constant attacks on them, but knowing how reality is not realized regarding anything between the Arabs and the Jews, would find it would take a miracle to win.

Abbas walked out on meetings with Netanyahu knowing he would turn to the UN.  He was expecting to receive East Jerusalem for starters, no doubt wanting all of it, when it  is a happy and whole undivided city under Israel.  Besides that, he wants tens of millions of Arabs to "return" and live in his new state, and still has the charter of Hamas to hold up to his people which wipes out Israel.  His intentions are not peaceful by any means.

His reasoning is that the Palestinians are a "People Without Hope."  I believe that their need for a state only appeared around 1967 when Israel won the war where all the Arab states attacked them and they lost.  They are not a unified people, then or even now as they are divided between Hamas and Fatah, the orignal PLO.    Only the fact that they are Arabs that were living in the surrounding states of the Middle East unifies them.  The original Arabs had entered the Tel Aviv and other Jewish concaves before 1948 looking for jobs and found them.  Now they intend to form the 194th state in the U.N. There already are 48 Muslim majority states in the world of which they originally came from.

With the "Arab Spring" event happening in the Arab world, we find a very unstable situation.  Uprisings doing away with old dictators are good, but this means that the Muslim Brotherhood is also gaining a foothold in these states.  The only stable state in the Middle East is Israel, who is having their own economic problems due to the current situation of living in an evermore dangerous neighborhood.

Whatever Happened to Jonathan Pollard

Nadene Goldfoot
Israel's Mossad is rated #3 as a secret spy agency by the world's spies when I thought it was #1.  The top dogs turn out to be  Britain and the USA. Britain and the USA share lots of information and people, but don't seem to do this with Israel.  She's on her own in finding out things.  Usually Israel is the scapegoat for their mess-ups.  Then we have an amateur spy that was not even a member of Mossad who is serving 45 years in prison having been deemed one.

In 1985 the USA found out that an American intelligence officer was spying for Israel, or so they thought.  It was Jonathan Pollard, born in 1954 and a Stanford graduate.  He was accused of leaking secret satellite photos the would help Israel in attacking Iraq's Osirak nuclear reactor.  He was denounced for leaking hundreds of boxes of US secret codes, plans and operations. He got information from the US Navy data banks on ocean shipping.

He had stumbled onto arms shipments to terrorists, which was routine material.  He had noticed a pattern of vessels traveling from Greece to Yemen where the PLO had a major base.  He did manage to get this information to Israel who checked on it with their Interpol and West German sources.  In 1984 the Greeks then seized an entire shipload of arms destined for the PLO.

His name became a word used for wholesale leaks of every kind that damaged US intelligence.  Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger wanted the maximum sentence for espionage.  In 1987 he was given a life sentence.

The information Pollard stumbled onto should have been passed onto Israel by the USA as we were friends.  Instead, CIA director, Bill Casey, had refused to give Israel satellite photos that they needed of Lebanon to counter Palestinian and Moslem terrorists who were attacking Israel across the border.  The USA also withheld information from Israel on German sales of chemical warfare equipment to Libya and Iraq.

Reliable intelligence in the USA says that Mossad had more and better sources of spies, and that Pollard wasn't a member of Mossad at all. Israel has said all along that he was not a Mossad member as well.   Israel was able to raid the Osirak reactor without the aid of the photos that Pollard had procured.  Pollard's photos were of the outside of the reactor shell.  Israelis actually had blueprints of it and knew where the construction was most vulnerable to their air attack.  The attack was justified as was recently proved.

Mossad had agents inside West German intelligence already who gave them a lot more details than Pollard had from NSA wiretaps.  Pollard may have thought he had something important when he found these items and had no way of knowing that he could actually be interferring with Israel's Mossad network.  He was thought to be only an amateur trying to be important.  His "helping out" gave Israel grief in the end.

The CIA had built his position up possibly to be covering for their own spying for the Russians.  What he had done in 1984 was stumble onto our government's first shipment of arms to Iran arranged by the British secret service. The money for this sale was to be used to ransom American hostages in Lebanon.  What the governments of USA and Britain decided to do was to shift all the blame onto the Jews.

The old saying that most of the evil in the world is done by good men with the best of intentions.  This could be true of Pollard in this case as well as others involved in this story.  If anything, Jonathan Pollard's eagerness to be a spy revealed the tip of the iceburg of the  CIA and British M16 involvement in spy work that they keep undercover from Israel.

The TV series, NCIS has romanticized the character of Ziva David, the Mossad liason officer played by Cote de Pablo.  She is faithfully working with Jethro Gibbs, played by Mark Hammon, the lead special agent from the Naval Criminal Investigative Services.  In reality, Mossad and the USA may not be this amicable but should be.

Rashid Khalidi's Complaint: Israel's Wanting to be Jewish State

Nadene Goldfoot
Remember Rashid Khalidi, the Palestinian American professor at Columbia U of Arab Studies?  He was given a going away party in 2003 as he was leaving the U. of Chicago for Columbia when Obama was still a state senator and they were together there at the party with Bill Ayers, former American terrorist.  Rashid was a former mouthpiece for Yasser Arafat and his wife Mona was  the translator for Arafat's press agency.

Rashid complained in the Chicago Tribune on August 31st that the House of Representatives just had a trip to Israel paid for by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee's American Israel Education Foundation, so it didn't come out of any taxpayer's pocket.  He thought Rep. Jackson, son of Jesse Jackson,  of Illinois should have stayed at home.  Actually, Israel welcomed them there in order to give them more information about Israel's situation.  I do hope they flew on El Al.  I felt the safest on that plane.

This Arab studies professor thinks that Israel is wrong in expecting to be recognized as the Jewish state and connects it to the "old fashioned idea of the USA being a white state only". In this he sees the Palestinian citizens of 1.4 million as 2nd class citizens.

This did happen to Jews living in Arab countries and they were deemed something in Sharia law called dhiminnis, or  even 3rd class citizens, but it is not that way for Arabs in Israel.  In Arab lands Jews were discriminated against as were others like the Christians.  They had to pay more in special poll  taxes, couldn't build higher than their Arab neighbors, and were under all sorts of injustices such as dress codes and worship had to be kept hidden.

And how would Rashid know anything?  Most likely he has never been to Israel nor has he read anything that would put Israel in a good light.  He had founded  the AAAN, Arab American Action Network,  which turned out to be "rabidly anti Israel.  They see Israel as illigitimate.  He tries to justify Palestinian terrorism, and calls his group a social service group." So of course he wouldn't like Jackson telling the Palestinians to recognize Israel as the homeland for the Jewish people.

Evidently Jackson talked to Palestinians about using non-violence and spent time talking to Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman and embraced him.  That seemed to infuriate Khalidi who said he was just trying to promote himself in Washington.  He thinks that progressives and others are the ones concerned with the rights of Palestinians.

Khalidi thinks Israel has been  dominating Palestinians for decades and that is why there is no peace between the two. By spouting off in such a way, especially after what these Representatives observed in Israel, he shows that he is not living in  reality at all.  To him, Palestinians are subjugated, humiliated and segregated.  To think that he is teaching Arab studies makes me shiver.

Back in 2003 Obama was reminiscing about the good times he had had talking with Khalidi at their kitchen table and looked forward to more of them.  Too bad both men couldn't have visited Israel with the Representatives to see what it was all about.

The True Facts About East Jerusalem

Nadene Goldfoot
In 1967 Israel won the war that was an attack from all the surrounding Arab countries and in doing so gained East Jerusalem that had been in Jordanian hands illegally.

The climate before this happened was full of lies about Jews and Israel as if working up to a pitch to produce fanatical soldiers against the fledgling state.  In 1962 Egypt's goverment reprinted an old text on the blood libel against Jews, "Talmudic Human Sacrifices"  for use in their schools.  Abdel Qati Jalal gave it an update saying that "the Talmud believes that the Jews are made of different material from the rest of mankind, those who do not share the beliefs of the Jews being animals devoid of sense or they are servants and chattels of the Jews.

The lies went on. "Their wise men laid it down that there is no law but their own desire."   It goes on to repeat many a story of other blood libels in history in which they seem to present truth to the children.  They also used the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion".  This was taught to Arab teenagers as a factual work, the Jewish admission of the conspiracy to dominate the world.  So the avenging army was all worked up against Jews.  With this horrible attitude being rejuvinated again, it is a miracle that Israel won.  What lying propaganda was used by the Nazis was again in vogue in Arab countries.

In the war of 1948, the Arab League was under Abdallah, and with British guidance, they captured the eastern part of Jerusalem including the Old City.  so, by 1967 the previous 19 years Jerusalem had been under Jordanian rule.   They had tried to obliterate the Jewish presence and all signs of Jewish identity.  They had destroyed all the synagogues.  The Hurvah was the most famous.  There an Arab put in a small stable for his ass or goat.  There had been an ancient Jewish cemetery on the Mount of Olives looking over the Old City.  They tore this up and used some of the tombstones for paving and some for lavatory seats in the Jordanian army camps.  Then all of a sudden they decided to show an attachment for Jerusalem.  They went about manufacturing facts to deceive themselves which resulted in their public passion for something not even in their Koran.  Because it was an important place to the Jews, this gave them cause to also declare it theirs as well.

After the Israelis captured the Old City in 1967, they found that hundreds of squatters had made their homes in the district.  Civil engineers cleared the ruins to rebuild the quarter after offering compensaton or alternate housing to these squatters.  This happened because during Jordanian rule, the Old City was was badly neglected.  East Jerusalem lacked the most basic services as steady water supply, plumbing and electricity.  Reunification with the rest of Jerusalem, making it one city again, meant that such services were now extended into East Jerusalem as well.

With 1967's freeing East Jerusalem, it came a whole city of freedom and friendship.  People could now move freely throughout all the city and had free access to the holy sites of Judaism, Christianity and Islam for anyone in the world.  It became administered fairly thanks to Teddy Kollek and his administration.  This was said by C.Witton Davies, Archdeacon of Christ Church in Oxford, England in 1979.

By April 1990, the USA's House of Representatives debated a resolution declaring Jerusalem the undivided capital of Israel.  Bill Emerson praised the record of Israel's government.  Dante Fascell said that "since Israel gained control of the Old City in 1967, it has been open to worshippers of all faiths".  Even Jimmy Carter said that religious freedom had been enhanced under Israeli rule.  He noted they did a better job than Jordan.  So what happened?  Why did the USA deny that Jerusalem, all of it, was Israel's capital?  Why is the USA embassy not there?  This is because of American policy being that the final status of the city is a matter for negotiation.  A consulate is located in East Jerusalem to handle matters relating to the Palestinians living in the territories of Judea and Samaria.  Otherwise, they have their embassy in Tel Aviv.

In 1990 Congress declared that "Jerusalem is and should remain the capital of the State of Israel" and "must remain the capital of the State of Israel" and "must remain an undivided city in which the rights of every ethnic and religious group are protected."  George Bush declared, "We did not approve of the status quo before 1967; in no way do we advocate a return to it now."  Secretary of State James Baker stated, "clearly, Jews and others can live where they want, east or west, and the city must remain undivided."

The UN Resolution 242 came up with the statement that East Jerusalem is considered "occupied territory."  though Israel annexed it, this violates the UN resolution.  I note that Jordan had illegally occupied East Jerusalem.  In fact, all of Jordan was originally meant to become Israel in the beginning of British decisions.
Arthur Goldberg, a drafter of this 242, has said that it in no way refers to Jerusalem.  He told the UN in 1967 that the armistice lines of 1948 were intended to be temporary.  This was particularly true of Jerusalem.  At no time in these many speeches did he refer to East Jerusalem as "occupied territory."

After 1948 the UN voted calling for internationalisation of Jerusalem.  Then they dropped the matter until Israel gained control of the whole city.  For 19 years the UN ignored Jordan's occupation of the eastern part of the city but adoped numerous resolutions criticizing Israel for altering the status of their once ancient capital, Jerusalem.  The UN clearly does not see matters the way the United States does.  They do have many Arab states involved in their decisions which alters their thinking.

And now we have our present USA government causing a heart attack to Israel in talking about going back to 1967 lines and renegotiating.  I do wish they would bone up on facts concerning Jerusalem.  Jerusalem was the ancient capital of Israel, deemed  so by King David in 1010 BCE,  and Jews have been living there for more than 3,000 years.  They have been the largest single group of people there since the 1840's.  It contains the Western Wall of the Temple, the holiest site in Judaism.  To Jews, the whole city is sacred.  It never was a capital under Muslim rule, or a cultural center.  The only part they consider holy is the Dome of the Rock.  The rest of the city is insignificant.  Under Israeli rule, all Muslims can visit the Dome.

In 1844 there were 7,120 Jews,  5,000 Muslims and 3,390 Christians living there.  In 1990 there were 378,200 Jews, 131,800 Muslims and 14,400 Christians.

For 3,000 years Jews pray 3 times a day "to Jerusalem, thy city, shall we return with joy."  "If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning."  No, we wish to remain with all of Jerusalem.  "Jews have loved her the most and have remained constant in that love throughout the centuries of their dispersion.  It is the longest, deepest love affair in history."

The group calling themselves "Palestinians" plan to have all of Jerusalem as their capital of their future state, and may have plans to start with East Jerusalem, again forcing all Jews out of their future lands of Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem (all ancient Jewish territory) .  Only because Jerusalem means so very much to Jews do they covet it.  With a Lebanese chairman in the UN to hear their cause in September, we will see what happens to Jerusalem.

Update: Russia, and several European countries, are strongly against any Jewish presence in all of Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria and also are not enthusiastic about Israel's being recognized as a “Jewish state.”  I'm not surprised as Russia banned Judaism in Russia.  They are against religion, period.  The Arabs are refusing to have the same status as the Vatican.

Important School Items for Southern Israel: Bomb Shelters

Nadene Goldfoot
Parents and students in Portland are looking forward to the start of school by buying all sorts of school supplies; crayons, pencils, Elmer's glue, etc.  Channel 8 is even helping out with a drive for donations for students that can't afford such things.

Southern Israel parents and students have a different need.  They feel their future means continued rocket attacks from Gaza-based terrorists that won't end for years.  Because of this, they need bomb shelters for the schools.  They now have mobile bomb shelters to place near schools.  They can accomodate up to 18 people for a short period.  That could be one class per shelter.

The residents are within  5 kilometers  (3 miles 188 yds)  from Gaza and get shellings that come so fast that they only have 15 seconds to get to shelter.

Not all the schools within bombing range have shelters.  Ofakim will be prepared but the elementary schools in the Ashkelon areas farther away do not have any.  That's where the large hospital is and they have had to prepare for such attacks as well.

Many of the largest schools in the region are prepared for missile strikes but many school care centers aren't.  Chabad has schools for boys and schools for girls from kindergarten up through 4th grade and they now have bomb shelters.

I remember going through fire drills, earthquake drills and bomb drills in Portland as a child.  Bomb drills were executed in the hallways.   These children go through drills of how fast they can get to bomb shelters.

Sderot, being the first town usually attacked as it is the closest to Gaza,  was able to get bomb shelters for their schools, but Israel can't afford to supply Ashkelon with them.

I taught in northern Israel in Safed at the junior high.  That's fairly close to the Lebanon border.  We had a bomb drill that was quite an experience for me.  I was lucky that the students knew just what to do because I didn't.  We went to a basement area where there were all sorts of art supplies and a movie projector.  I have memories of needing to climb out on a ladder that I refused to do, wearing a skirt and being afraid of doing it.  It seemed like we had to hang in there for a terribly long time.

Each apartment building had a bomb shelter.  I wasn't going to be able to bring my female German shepherd with me, so decided that I would hold up in my basement apartment if need be.  My dog was a bigger scaredy-cat than I was, so I couldn't leave her alone to hear horrible sounds of sirens and possible explosions.

Yes, there's all kinds of things to think about when you're living in an area that is being shelled by your neighbor.  It affects your whole life.  It's not just how many casualties are numbered that counts.  It's the daily routines of life that are affected.   In Israel they just worry about getting through a day without being bombed.  These brave people are taking the stresses in their stride.  These are just problems to solve.

Parents have reason to worry.  2009 was a terrible year with 569 rockets and 289 mortars raining into Southern Israel.  2010's count was 150 rockets and 215 mortars.  2011 also has had constant shelling.  In just the first few days of January there were 17 rockets and 31 mortars that fell.   July 30th grad missiles hit Ashkelon sending 8 people to the hospital in shock.  Apartments and other buildings sustained damage.
On August 2nd Eilat, the furthest southern city was hit.  One missile went right into Aqaba, Jordan accidently and killed one person, and wounded several others.  That shows that the range of these missiles has stepped up.  August 18th  was another bad day of lots of missiles and rockets shot into Israel.

One thing, those kindergarteners will learn to count to 15 very fast; Akhad, shtaim, shalosh, arbah, Khamesh, sesh, seveh, sh'monah, taishah, esser, akhad esar, sh'naym assar, sh'lo shaasar, arba aasar, kha 'mee shaasar.

UPdate 2;48pm Stand For Israel; "Responding to the escalation of attacks on southern Israel, The Fellowship is purchasing 100 bomb shelters for $1 million to be placed in areas targeted by terrorists in recent months. "Our mission is to help the people of Israel in whatever way we can," Rabbi Eckstein said."
