Roman Destruction of 2nd Temple and Judeans

From 37 to 100 CE, the land of Judah had been occupied by the Romans.  Romans are about to attack Jerusalem in the picture above.   "When the Romans entered, they slaughtered many Jews  from 66 to 70 CE by putting most on the cross."  As the siege of Jerusalem began in the year 70, the Passover sacrifice was beginning to which naturally many thousands of pilgrims had arrived from all parts of the country.  The number of the besieged was then very great.  Among them were many from beyond the Euphrates and other foreign lands. 

1,100,000 men perished during the siege.  97,000 were taken captive and of these, only 40,000 were saved-all being citizens of Jerusalem.  The rest were sold as slaves.  Some were sent into the mines of Egypt.  Others were distributed among the provinces for the circuses.  The 40,000 found homes nearby and others headed in the direction of Rome, to continue onto France and Germany eventually.  

In the year of 71, Titus marched thousands of Judeans he took as slaves to Rome.  The Arch of Titus commemorates the event.  He became the Roman emperor from 79 to 81 CE.  As the son of Vespasian, he had taken over command of the Roman army in Judea from his father in the year 70, when the Romans burned down the beloved 2nd Temple of the Jews.  Then he destroyed Jerusalem after a 5 month long siege.  Jewish tradition is calling Titus "wicked."  His mistress was Bernice, a Judean princess.  Perhaps because of her, he didn't accede to the demand of the people of Antioch to abolish Jewish privileges there.

" Battering rams made little progress, but the fighting itself eventually set the walls on fire; a Roman soldier threw a burning stick onto one of the Temple's walls. Destroying the Temple was not among Titus' goals, possibly due in large part to the massive expansions done by Herod the Great mere decades earlier. Titus had wanted to seize it and transform it into a temple dedicated to the Roman Emperor and the Roman pantheon. The fire spread quickly and was soon out of control. The Temple was captured and destroyed on 9/10th of Tisha B'Av,at the end of August, and the flames spread into the residential sections of the city.  Josephus described the scene:Everywhere was slaughter and flight. Most of the victims were peaceful citizens, weak and unarmed, butchered wherever they were caught. Round the Altar the heaps of corpses grew higher and higher, while down the Sanctuary steps poured a river of blood and the bodies of those killed at the top slithered to the bottom.

Details easier to see in black and white.  The seven-branched menorah and trumpets are clearly depicted. It became a symbol of the Jewish diaspora. In a later era, Pope Paul IV made it the place of a yearly oath of submission. Until the modern State of Israel was founded in 1948, many Jews refused to walk under it due to a rabbinical prohibition.  The menorah depicted on the Arch served as the model for the menorah used on the emblem of the state of Israel

                                                                       
The Arch of Titus in Rome was erected by the Senate in honor of Vespasian and Titus.  The present one we can see in Rome dates from the reign of Dimitian who reigned from 81 to 96 CE.  The original structure did not survive till then.

 It shows the goddess of victory crowning Titus.  The march of Jewish captives bearing the Temple vessels, the shewbread table, 7-branched candlesticks and the trumpet; the Jordan River and the sacrificial procession is seen in the Arch.
                                                                                   

By the year 72, Vespasian, Roman emperor from 69 to 79,  took 12,,000 Jews as slaves from Judah to Rome to build the Colosseum under himself.  Nero had sent him in 67 to subdue the Judean rebellion and by 68, he had conquered the Galilee, Transjordan and the Judean coast before suspending operations after receiving the news of Nero's death.  Then in 69 he was emperor!  The campaign was ended by his son.

What is Holy?

 G-d's world is great and holy.  Among the holy lands in the world is the Holy Land of Israel.
                                                                           

In the land of Israel the holiest city is Jerusalem

                                                                           

 In Jerusalem the holiest place was the Temple*, and in the Temple the holiest spot was the holy of holies.
                                                                             

     There are 70 peoples in the world.  Among these holy peoples is the people of Israel.  The holiest of the people of Israel is the tribe of Levi.  In the tribe of Levi the holiest are the priests.  Among the priests, the holiest was the high priest.
                                                                           

Friday Night Shabbat Dinner

         There are 354 days in the Jewish calendar year.  Among these the holidays are holy.  Higher than these is the holiness of the Sabbath (Friday night to Saturday night).

 Among Sabbaths the holiest is the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) , the Sabbath of Sabbaths.
                                                                               

     There are 70 languages in the world.  Among the holy languages is the holy language of Hebrew.

And in the Torah the holiest part is the Ten Commandments.  In the Ten Commandments the holiest of all words is the Name of G-d.                                
                                                                               

     And once during the year, at a certain hour, these 4 supreme sanctities of the world were joined with one another.  That was on the Day of Atonement, when the high priest would enter the holy of holies and there utter the Name of G-d.
                                                       
                 
                                                                           

And because this hour was beyond measure holy and awesome, it was the time of utmost peril not only for the high priest but for the whole of Israel.  For if, in this hour, there had, G-d forbid, entered the mind of the high priest a false or sinful thought, the entire world would have been destroyed.
                                                                           

     Every spot where a man raises his eyes to heaven is a holy of holies.  Every man, having been created by G-d in His own image and likeness, is a high priest.  Every day of man's life is a Day of Atonement, and every word that a man speaks with sincerity is the Name of the Lord.

Moses and Aaron, brothers, were from the tribe of Levi.  Moses had his older brother Aaron be the first high priest.  All males with the Cohen gene are descendants of Aaron, and they serve in the congregation as Cohens with certain responsibilities such as being called first to read from the Torah.  It was Moses who brought us the 10 Commandments from Mt. Sinai.

Friday, October 31 Day of Rage in Israel

A rabbi has been shot in a serious assassination attempt by a Hamas terrorist .  The terrorist is now dead  from a shootout with the police and is a martyr according to the Arabs.  The rabbi is in critical condition.  All he wanted was the right to pray on the site where our Temple used to stand.  The Arabs won't allow even a slight movement of the lips, thinking the person is praying.  If this is seen, he is arrested.
                                                                       

 Though all of Jerusalem is Israel's capital, this site, the Temple Mount site on Mt. Moriah, is taboo to Jews as a place to pray through Moshe Dayan's decision at the end of the 1967 war in keeping peace with Jordan.
                                                                               

Now, Friday has been declared "A Day of Rage," as if this attack wasn't enough for the Arabs.  They've been rioting for several weeks as it is in Jerusalem.  They pick on Friday, their day of rest and prayer to rage.  Friday evening is the start of the Jewish sabbath and Friday in the United States is Halloween, the night of trick or treaters out to get candy.
                                                                             
It is Fatah, former PLO, who are led by Mahmoud Abbas that declares this day one of rage.  They even call on their fighters, yes, they do have fighters, to defend Al-Aqsa.  This is referring to the Mosque of Omar, aka Dome of the Rock which was built on the Temple area of Jerusalem by the Caliph Abd el-Malik in the 8th century CE.
                                                                       

El Aksa, which in Arabic means the farthest from Mecca and this site supposedly marks the site of the legendary flight of Mohammed from Mecca to Jerusalem on his flying horse.

Abbas also calls for aid "OCCUPIED" Jerusalem.  They're not as aware of facts like Jordan's King Abdullah, who knows that Jordan lost the War of 1967 and thus lost land that Abdullah I had taken illegally.  Jerusalem is again in the hands of Jews which their king David (1010-970 BCE) had built.  In fact, it's called the City of David.  Palestinian Arabs lived in Jerusalem from 1948 to 1967, 19 years without Jews around.  Jews have lived there for over 3,000 years minus 19 years.  Well, you have to say that they are persistent if nothing else.  Once they start a fable, they stick to it.  They don't want to be confused with the facts.

Abbas is calling for his day of rage big time.  The announcement was published by the Fatah Mobilization and Organization Commission today.  The Day of Rage is to happen throughout Israel and in countries which are home to refugees. 

 They are to express their opposition to ANY  attack on the holy places and foremost among them is the Al-Aqsa Mosque.  They consider desecration of Al-Aqsa as a declaration of a religious war against the Palestinian people and the Arab Islamic nations.

All this is read into their minds from some Jews who just want to pray there but haven't been allowed to do so, even by their own Israeli government.  How terrible!  Praying!

There hasn't been any act of aggression to desecrate any mosque in Israel.  It's what they perceive to happen.  It turns out that what they would do to Israelis they see and think that this is in the works by Israelis.  They don't get it that we don't do things to others that we wouldn't want to happen to us.  It's our Golden Rule.  It's Judaism in a nutshell.

Jerusalem Temple Mount Faithful Head Suffers Assassination Attempt

An assassination attempt was made on the head of the Temple Mount Faithful organization in Jerusalem, Rabbi Yehuda Glick, last night, October 29, 2014 outside of the Begin Center.  He had just been in a conference about the Jewish presence on the Temple Mount.

Glick has dual citizenship with the USA and Israel and has advocated for Jews to have the right to pray on the Temple Mount, which they are not allowed to do because the grounds and Mosque are in Jordan's hands and they won't allow it.  Glick himself was arrested last October for praying on the Temple Mount.so thus was barred from there.  The decision was reversed following a 12-day hunger strike.  He has been constantly threatened all the time for wanting to pray there.

This Temple Mount area is the site of the Jews' Temple built by King Solomon (961-920 BCE). Jews had prayed in their Temple for over 1,000 years before the Romans destroyed it.   The Babylonians had attacked and destroyed the Temple in 586 BCE, but Jews finally were allowed to go back and rebuild it.  Again, it was destroyed in 70 CE by the Romans.

 Then, a Roman temple was built later on the site, and since the Moslem Period when Mohammad died in 632 CE, a mosque has stood there which is the Mosque of Omar, also called the Dome of the Rock.  It was built in the center of the Temple area (al-Harim ash-Sherif) in Jerusalem by Caliph Abd al-Malik in about 738 to replace the temporary structure set up by Caliph Omar a century earlier.  It is situated on the traditional site of Mt. Moriah.   The area around the western and southern walls of the Herodian Temple compound was excavated  after the Six Day War of 1967 in 1968.  Moshe Dayan agreed to letting the Mosque and grounds remain in the hands of Jordan in order to keep the peace.
                                                                       

 Rabbis have also come out to say that the site is no longer holy to us.  The Temple Mount Faithful have been making plans to build a 3rd Temple.  Plans may have started as early as 1967, but I know that they were in progress in 1980 as I was able to meet my 3rd cousin, Stanley Goldfoot in Jerusalem and he showed me their plans which was a diagram on a scroll of the future Temple.  Stanley had been the chief of Intelligence for the Stern Group before Israel's birth of May 14, 1948.  Like Boy Scouts, they wanted to be prepared for the right time to rebuild, but hadn't decided on where that would be.
                                                                       

The shooter was 32 year old Palestinian Mu taz Hijazi, an Islamic Jihad activist who was wearing a helmet and got away on a motorcycle.  He had shot Glick 3 times.  Hijazi went up to Glick and asked him to identify himself and then shot him in the chest and stomach.

Hijazi was killed early Thursday morning in East Jerusalem after a shootout with the police.  Officers came to arrest him and were then shot at by Hijazi.  They shot back and he was killed.  Hijazi had a record and had been arrested and had served 11 years in an Israeli prison.  He got out in 2012.

Islamic Jihad said they took responsibility.  This was an act of Palestinian vengeance in response to what is happening in Jerusalem.  Right now Glick is fighting for his life and the latest report 2 hours ago is that he is in critical condition.   There has been much rioting going on in Jerusalem lately.  Last week, a Hamas terrorist plowed into a crowd of pedestrians with his car, killing a 3 month old baby girl and a young woman.  Seven others were injured.  Palestinians have been throwing Molotov cocktails and have thrown rocks at Jews.  In order to contain this, Israel had to add on 1,000 security forces around Jerusalem.  The level of readiness is to the 2nd highest level nationwide.  The Temple Mount has been closed to Muslims and Jews.(Update) It was opened after a day of closure.)

Fighting from keeping Jews from praying on their own Mount Moriah!  This is what they are all up in arms about.  If a person is seen from the Mosque to be moving their lips in prayer, they have been arrested or accosted by the Muslim authorities.  .  Of course this makes it all the more paramount to pray there.  You don't tell a Jerusalemite that he can't pray in his own city of Jerusalem!

The Palestinian Arabs are celebrating right now for this attempt.  This attitude is probably the #1 reason why there will never be peace between the Arabs and Jews.  (1).

Found Lost Tribe of Israel Right in Israel Since 1950-52: Jewish Kurds

Beginning , in about 740 BCE, the Northern Kingdom of Israel was conquered by the Neo-Assyrian monarchs, Tiglath-Pileser III (Pul) and Shalmaneser V. 

By 722-721 BCE, nearly twenty years after the initial deportations, the ruling city of the Northern Kingdom of Israel, Samaria, was finally taken by Sargon II after a three-year siege started by Shalmaneser V.  The Assyrian Empire attacked Israel in 721 BCE and led most of the best of the 10 tribes of Israel off into captivity. Assyrian cuneiform states that 27,290 captives were taken from Samaria,  the capital of the Northern Kingdom of Israel, by the hand of Sargon II.

Some of them  wound up in Kurdistan long ago.  The Jews of Kurdistan migrated to Palestine during the past centuries, but the majority  fled to Israel together with the Iraqi Jewish in Operation Ezra and Operation Nehemiah during 1950 to 1952.  "It has been estimated that before the establishment of the State of Israel there were between 20,000 and 30,000 Jews living in Kurdistan."

The Jews had formed the Kingdom of Adiabene in northern Mesopotamia in the 1st century BCE.  It became an independent kingdom.  Their queen was Helena who was converted to Judaism in 30 CE with her sons, Kings Monobaz II and Izates, who supported the Jews during the war against the Romans from 66 to 70 CE.  The tombs of the Kings in Jerusalem was their burial place.

Later they just faded into obscurity only to reappear in the Middle Ages.  One of many accounts of the period about them was the story of David Alroy, a Jewish leader from Amadiyah in the 12th century who revolted against the Persian rulers and tried to recapture Jerusalem.
                                                                               

Many centuries later they were found to have lived as protected subjects of the Kurdish tribal chieftains called aghas and survived in the urban centers and villages in which they lived.
                                                                         

 Kurds are known to be the closest match to Jews by DNA.  "Scientists who participated in the research said the findings seem to indicate both peoples had common ancestors who lived in the northern half of the fertile crescent, where northern Iraq and Turkey are today. Some of them, it is assumed, wandered south in pre-historic times and settled on the eastern shores of the Mediterranean.--Professor Ariella Oppenheim and Dr. Marina Feirman, who carried out the research at the Hebrew University, said they were surprised to find a closer genetic connection between the Jews and the populations of the fertile crescent than between the Jews and their Arab neighbors.  "In the article by Nebel et al.  the authors show that Kurdish and Sephardi Jews have paternal genetic heritage indistinguishable. The study shows that mixtures between Kurdish Jews and their Muslim hosts are negligible and that Kurdish Jews are closer to other Jewish groups than to their long term host population. Mr. Hammer had already shown the strong correlation between the genetic heritage of Jews from North Africa with Kurdish Jews

According to Mordechai Zaken, Kurdistani Jews survived by supporting their tribal chieftains and village aghas in times of need the through financial contributions, occasional gifts, many services as well as taxes and dues in the form of commissions of their commercial and agricultural transactions.

For they  got protection and grant them patronage in the tribal arena.  Some wealthy Jewish merchants and leaders had to deal at times with the aghas who coveted their vineyards or other things and who took what they wanted.  It became a tribal tradition to live that way; protect the Jews who provided them with treats.

These Jews spoke a different language from the main Kurdish populace, and they knew that their ancestors came from Israel, but they still thought of themselves as Kurdish Jews.  That's why they finally returned home.

One interesting note:  According to 2nd Chronicles, Chapter 30, there is evidence that at least some people of the Northern Kingdom of Israel were not exiled. These were invited by king Hezekiah (720-692 BCE) to keep the Passover in a feast at Jerusalem with the Judean population.

However, Assyria had been conquered by Babylon, and Babylon had been conquered by the Medo-Persians.

"According to the Books of Chronicles chapter 9 line 3, the Israelites, who took part in The Return to Zion, are stated to be from the Tribe of Judah alongside the Tribe of Simeon that was absorbed into it, the Tribe of Benjamin, theTribe of Levi (Levites and Priests) alongside the tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh, which according to the Book of Kings2 Chapter 7 were supposedly exiled by the Assyrians. (The Biblical scholars Umberto Cassuto and Elia Samuele Artom claimed these two tribes' names to be a reference to the remnant of all Ten Tribes that was not exiled and absorbed into the Judean population)."  Therefore, in Judah were the remnant of some of the other lost tribes.  Not all had been taken and lost.  

"There are not many female rabbis in the Jewish history. The first known female rabbi in the history is Asenath Barzanî, a Kurdish woman from South Kurdistan."

Asenath Barzanî was born in 1590. She was the daughter of the Rabbi of the Jews in the south Kurdistan Samuel Barzanî, who trained his daughter and taught her the mystic secrets of Judaism which he never revealed to anyone.	File photo
According to the historians, Asenath Barzanî wrote in his biography: “During my entire life I did not step out of the house. I was the daughter of the King of Israel. I was educated by rabbis. My father was focusing too much on me that he did not teach me any art or handicraft but divinity.”

Why The Need for Hamas to Bomb Israel?

Hamas Palestinians in Gaza are now unified with Fatah Palestinians, known as the PA of Judea-Samaria . Hamas has been bombing Israel since 2001 and still they haven't stopped. In fact, now that they have unified, it's been stepped up.   Why?  Why was there a war in Gaza in the first place with Israel?  Is Obama watching all this?

Hamas called out the big O word;  OCCUPATION.  Charles Krauthammer asked, "What occupation?  In 2005 Israel pulled out of Gaza.  It dismantled every village, withdrew every soldier, evacuated every Jew and left nothing behind except the greenhouses where Jews had grown fruit and flowers for export.  These were left as they were to help Gaza's economy.  How about that?  That was a Jewish decision.  It was not appreciated, though.  The Arabs trashed them when they took over.    There is no occupation.

Israel said its border with Gaza was an international frontier.  They  had renounced any claim to the territory and considered it an independent entity.  At that moment Israel was actually creating the first Palestinian state.

The other Muslims had never been that gracious to Palestinians.  Those held in refugee camps were not considered citizens and have no rights and are not allowed to find work.  No, that's because they're used as pawns to fight the Jews in Israel.  Even the Ottoman Empire and the Egyptians who held Gaza before Israel had not  done such a thing as give the Palestinians such recognition..

Sometimes I think my Israel is too good to people, but they did this because they wanted to live in peace. with these Arabs calling themselves Palestinians.
                                                                     

                                                     Rocket  fired from Gaza

The world had kept demanding that Israel give up land for peace, and they had done it successfully with Egypt.  So they took the chance and it has failed.    The Arabs turned around and voted in Hamas terrorists to rule over them.  They turned Gaza into an armed camp and there has been war ever since.  Any truce from Hamas, a hudna, has only been a tactic for giving themselves a rest to get ready for the next round.

The problem is that Hamas says that all of Israel is occupied.  They say that Israel is illegitimate.  They tell everyone it is a cancer, a crime against humanity.  Did they have to alter any of this in the peace talks?  I doubt it.

The big brother for Hamas is Iran.  They are their arms supplier.  Hamas' objective has been openly declared.  Why hasn't the USA looked at it?  Their goal is to liberate, destroy Tel Aviv and the rest of pre-1967 Israel.  It is, as Charles said, it's raison d'etre.

Jews were first attacked by Hamas with suicide bombings.  That caused Israel to build a fence for protection.  Hamas has come back with rockets that are fired indiscriminately at a civilian population in very populated areas.  This started off with 150 rockets into Israel.  Just 2 years ago Hamas was getting Fajr-5 rockets that were smuggled in from Iran that could reach Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.  This puts 50% of the Israeli population in harms way.  They get finances and political support from the other Middle Eastern states like Qatar who gave them $400 million, especially since the Arab Spring and the reversal in Turkey to a more Islamist society.  Previously for the past 60 years, Turkey  had been a friend of Israel.  While Israel works to defend its population, Recep Erdogan called Israel a terrorist state.  Is this eastern thinking compared to western?

The best thing that has happened is that Egypt acted quickly and ousted the head of the Muslim Brotherhood from presidency.  Morsi is out and Sisi is in. How Morsi ever got in in the first place is a mystery to me.  They had been an outlawed group.  Obama had them sit in the front row during his Cairo speech, though, so that recognition must have given them a leg up.   Therefore, Egypt is still honoring it's peace with Israel.  They even have worked together.

There was a cease fire on November 21st in 2012, but we see that didn't last long.  Over 500 rockets have been fired into southern Israel in 2014.  On April 23, Hamas and Fatah united.  The firing of rockets continues.  I count at least 22 mortars and rockets have been fired since their unification.  Why do they keep on pelting Israel?  Their goal is to wipe out Israel.  They don't want a peace.  They want to destroy Israel.

3 rockets were fired from Gaza at the Hof Ashkelon and Sha'ar HaNegev Regional Councils, after rocket alert sirens sounded. No injuries were reported.

April 24

A mortar shell exploded near the fence in Southern Gaza, endangering Israelian soldiers. Later in the day explosive device explodes near IDF force at the Northern Gaza border. No injuries or damage were reported

May 1

A rocket hit an open area in Eshkol. No one war hurt, no damage was reported

May 21

Lots of mortar shells were fired at IDF forces on the Gaza boarder. No injuries, damages in attack. 

May 23

A rocket exploded in open field in Sha'ar HaNegev Regional Council. No reports of damages or injuries.

May 31

In the Golan heights' area sirens were heard in several towns followed by explosions. It was assumed, that these rockets were not targeted to Israel but a result of the Syrian battle.

A Syrian mortar shell hit the Mt. Hermon region, no injuries or damage were reported.

June 4

At least two Syrian mortar shells land at the Israeli Golan. The Iron Dome missile defense system were activated, but were stopped, when calculation said, that the mortars would hit open field. Additionally, Syrians shot machine gun fire. The IDF believes, that the goal was not to hit the Israelian side, but celebratory fire from Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces.

A rocket sent from Gaza narrowly missed a main artery in southern Israel as it landed in a nearby dirt field without causing any injuries.

June 14

2 of 3 rockets fired from the Gaza fell in the Hof Ashkelon regional council in the afternoon. No injuries or damage were reported.

June 15

In Ashkelon a series of explosions were heard in the evening. 4 rockets were fired from Gaza, 2 of them were intercepted by the Iron Dome. Fragments of the rockets fell across the city. There were no reports of injuries or material damages.

A rocket from Gaza landed in an open area in the Ashkelon area. No damage or injuries. This year Palestinians fired more than 500 rockets and mortars.

Lies Palestinians Tell About Geography and History on TV Programs

One of the biggest problems confronting Israel in the creation of an Arab Palestine today is that the Palestine Authority of Fatah has continually fought the battle against Israel by propaganda.  The main way they have been doing this is to use TV programs to brainwash and teach their people only what they want them to think.  Israel, the 20% left of 100% promised originally by the Mandate, is an accepted international fact , at least by everyone except the Palestinians.  Hey, Abbas, we already lost 80% of our promised land.  You're not getting these cities that are part of Israel.  Israel's population in 2014 is over 8 million with 6,135,000 Jews (75%) and 1,694,000 Arabs (20%).

On their show, Palestine This Morning, they are inserting such ideas in between shows with a new filler only started on May 6th that runs every day and is also directed to the children.  It's a cutsie way of telling them all that cities in Israel are Palestine cities.  They are calling Jerusalem, Haifa, Jaffa, Nazareth, Acre, Negev Desert all cities and places that are theirs.

Can anyone see the problems I foresee in the creation of a Palestine with further rights as a  state who is calling such erroneous pieces of information to their population?  Such a creation of a state should not come about until  these Palestinians can accept our history and rights first which must happen in order to have peaceful relations.  Otherwise, we're in for continued war.

Here's the real facts about such places which are a part of Israel as decided many times through the League of Nations and the United Nations.  The fact is that the Jewish Homeland was cut apart and lost 80% of the promised land in 1948 when Jordan took it during Israel's immediate fight for survival after broadcasting the fact that the UN accepted their state.
                                                                         

1. Acre:  (Hebrew-Akko)  A commercial town started in 15th century (3,514)  BCE on a harbor where glass was manufactured.  Purple dye also made here.  Assigned to the tribe of Asher (one of 12 tribes of Jacob)  When Alexander the Great had power there, Greeks populated it so was a Hellenistic city.  In 638 Muslims conquered it who persecuted Jewish neighbors  and in 66 CE massacred 2,000 Jews.  The city declined under the Muslims and was only revived when the Crusaders came in.  From 1191  to 1291 it was their capital which then had a Jewish community.  In 1740  a Bedouin sheikh Dahir al-Ummar, who reigned in Galilee, made it his capital but he favored Jewish settlement and there was a small settlement there.  In 1775 -1804 Ahmed el-Jazzar controlled the city with a Jewish treasurer, Hayyim Farhi.  Jazzar was a brutal man.  From 1832-1840 Egypt took it under Ibrahim Pasha, and in 1918 it was captured from the Turks by the British. By 1948 it was an Arab town of 12,000.  Most left town during the battle for the city.   It was in the mandate and granted to the future Jewish Homeland.  The population in 1990 was 37,200.  Only 8,450 were Arabs.  By 2012 the population was 47,200.  
                                                                         

2. Haifa: I lived here from 1980 to 1981 for my first 10 months of living in Israel.  Appeared after 1st century as the home of Jewish scholars and as the southern limit of the coast on which the purple snail was caught: In 1071 was the seat of the Jerusalem academy; in 1100 Jews defended it against the crusaders.  When the sanding  up of the Acre harbor and a European colony was established the modern rise of Haifa began from 1850 onwards.  1905 a railway terminus and then the Jewish quarter of Hadar ha-Carmel was established where I shopped many times.  1925 came with the Hebrew Technical College (Technion).  The British Mandate saw to the deepening of the harbor was accomplished in 1933.  The city was taken over by the Haganah on April 22, 1948 and the Arab population fled.  Since then it is Israel's main port.   and a center of industrial development.  The population was 225,000 in about 1975 and hasn't changed much. By 2012 it was 272,200.   It's the base for Israel's ships.  It has religious sites like the Cave of Elijah and is the religious center of the Bahai  since the tomb of Baha Effendi is there.  The University of Haifa opened in 1970.
                                                                       

3. Jaffa: (Hebrew-Yapho) a city joined with Tel Aviv.  Mentioned from 16th century BCE Egyptian and Assyrian records, on coastline, it marked the boundary of the Philistines,  but a part of the tribal area of Judah (the largest of the 12 tribes from where "Jews" comes from).  During the Persian period it belonged to the Phoenicians.  During Hellenistic days it was an independent city .  Judah the Maccabee avenged massacre of the Jewish community there.  Brothers Jonathan and Simon took Jaffa and replaced the foreign population with Jews, then was Jewish port until 70 CE.  Main harbor in Roman days-renamed Flavia Ioppe.  1921-1922 Arab riots forced Jews to leave and go to Tel Aviv which was a suburb of Jaffa.  By 1946 the population was 101,000 of which 30% were Jews which was 30,300.  During War of Independence saw Arab sections capitulate and all Arabs left after May 14, 1948 or before.  Jews then populated it.  It was joined with Tel Aviv.  One quarter has become an artists' colony.  The population is counted in with Tel Aviv so that by 2012 they had 414,600 people.
                                                                             

4. Jerusalem: sits in Judean mountains, part of Judah's tribe and capital of Israel.  Ancient history goes back to 19th, 18th centuries BCE . Actually lived in early Bronze Age of 3,500 BCE;   King David made it his capital, 1010 BCE-970 BCE  took it from people who called it Jebus.  King Solomon's capital from 970 BCE to 930 BCE.  Fell to Babylonians by Nebuchadnezzar in 586 BCE.  Jews returned in 519 BCE.   Romans destroyed it in 70 CE, named it Aelia Capitolina till Arab period.  Arabs call it el-Kuds. Population in 1838 was 11,000 with 3,000 Jews; in 1910 population was 68,000 with 50,000 Jews.  During WWI population fell to 50,000.  In 1946 population was 165,000 with 100,000 Jews.  Arabs rioted in 1922,1929 and again in 1936-1939 spurred on by Sherif of Jerusalem Emir Feisal who was against Abdullah's idea of accepting Jews.  In 1967's War east Jerusalem was united with the rest.  In 1980 The Jerusalem Law had Israel sovereignty over whole city.  Population in 2012 was 815,300.  
                                                                             

5. Nazareth: town in lower Galilee, 24 miles from Haifa.  New Testament has Joseph's family living here and where Jesus grew up as a Jew.  It remained a Jewish town until Byzantine times.  By 570 a church was built there.  It was a center during Crusader times.  Destroyed in 1263 by Mameluke leader Baybars.  In 1620 Franciscan monks resettled and built a church in 1730.  In 1948 it was occupied by Israel forces and has become the headquarters of the Northern district of Israel.  It is the principal Arab city in Israel.  Population in 1990 was 50,600 with 7,390 Muslims and others who are Christians.  Above it is the new Jewish settlement called Upper Nazareth with a population in 1990 of 24,900 including 3,000 Arabs.  I had to come here to see about my teaching credentials.  By 2012 the population was 74,000.

6. Negev Desert:  (Negeb) the very dry land in the southern part of Israel covering 5,138 sq miles or 60% of Israel. In prehistoric days it was settled in the north near Beersheba of Chalcolithic settlements going back 5,000 years BCE. that had copper mines.  During the Jewish Patriarchal period there was settlements.  A Beersheba-Egypt route was developed then.  After the Jewish Exodus, it was occupied by nomadic tribes like the Amalekites (mean tribe) but northern part belonged to the tribe of Simeon (one of 12 tribes of Jacob).  It later joined up with tribe of Judah.  King David conquered the Amalekites and Edom and opened up Elath and copper mines for Israelites.  Under King Solomon, maritime trade started with Phoenician help from Elath to Ophir of southern Arabia.  In 70 CE when Jerusalem fell, it was occupied by Nabateans.  Arab conquest after 632 CE northern settlements fell apart down to Crusader period.  By 1900's the desert was inhabited only by Beduin.  Turks finally refounded Beersheba.  The British and Turkish armies fought each other here.  In the 1947 partition plan it was allotted to the Jewish state.  Egypt occupied it in May 1948 except in Jewish areas.  War of Independence saw Egypt driven out (Oct 1948-March 1949) .  Beersheba is linked to Israel railroads, roads are built to connect to other cities like Elath, Sodom.  Oil pipelines go across, built in 1956-1957 and 1968.   In 2012 the population of Beersheba was 197,300.
