The Law of Return to Israel: Who and When Jews Returned

Nadene Goldfoot

Jews suffered greatly when Jerusalem was taken by the Romans in 70 CE.  They were taken to Rome or other places as slaves.  Some managed to remain in Judah while others scattered to other parts of the Middle East.  It wasn't till May 14, 1948 that Israel was again re-created out of what the Ottoman Empire had taken of what was renamed as "Palestine."  This was because of the WWI when the Ottomans had lost the war-being they were on Germany's side

Israel is for the Ingathering of the Exiles

The Law of Return of 1950 gave legal sanction to all immigrant Jews. Israel was created as a haven for Jews who had suffered for 2,000 years from anti-Semitism in other countries for being what they were;  Jewish.  Judah  had been occupied by the Romans.  Jews had been blamed for killing Christ by causing him to be crucified, which was something that the Romans had done to thousands of Jews in Judah,  but Jews were blamed anyway being he had been Jewish even though they had denied causing this.   Jews had been the object of attacks by the Crusaders, the Spanish Inquisition, and then the Holocaust and actually were expulsed from countries or forcibly converted to Christianity.  Some communities had been annihilated even before the Holocaust.  They had not had the rights of citizens in these 2,000 years until after WWI.  In the Middle East they were treated as Dhimmis, which were not 1st class citizens.  There they were penalized in many ways for being Jewish.  The one country of safety was the USA, which had its share of anti-Semitism.

Rome, parade of displaying Jewish artifacts stolen from Jerusalem

Now, what is a Jew?  There is no legal definition.  There are halachic concepts (rabinical law) and sociological ones.  By halacha, a Jew is a person born of a Jewish mother.  They can also be Jewish by conversion to Judaism.  Under 1970's amendment, the Law of Return grants Israeli nationality also to the spouse of any immigrant Jew and his descendants for 2 generations and to their spouses equally whether they were Jewish by halacha or not.

The population of Israel in May 1948 was 650,000.  By May 1972 it was 3,164,000.  This shows that 1,400,000 were immigrants (olim).  Immigrants entered in 4 large waves of immigration.  They have continued to arrive throughout all these years according to their own needs as well.

1.  May 1948-end of 1951:  754,800 came from :
     a. Holocaust in Europe mainly from Poland, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia.
     b. Iraq (121,000 out of 130,000); Yemen (44,000 out of 45,000); Libya (30,500 out of 35,000).

2. 1955-1957:  165,000 came from:
     a. Morocco and Tunisia
     b. Poland and other countries such as Romania

3. 1961-1964:  215,000 came from:
    a. Eastern Europe
    b. North Africa

4. 1967-to end 1972; 200,000 on came from:
   a. North and South America
   b. Western Europe
  c. Soviet Union

1981:  Here I am in my Sachnoot apartment in Safed sitting on my bed-with pillows to look like a sofa in front of my barred window.  That's because we are on the ground floor.  We just moved in after living in Haifa for 10 months attending the ulpan (school).

5.  1980-2013 My husband and I made aliyah in 1980  and were in a large group of teachers of English from the Soviet Union.  We were one of the few actual professional teachers from the West and went through a 10 month program to earn our certification to teach English in Israel first.  There were over 40 in our class that was later divided into Hebrew language groups to bring us up to a level of higher ability.

19,135 olim arrived in 2011
18,691 olim arrives in 2012
Of them 2,432 were from Ethiopia.  Western Europe olim were 3,243 in 2012.  Soviet Union olim were 7,755 and France olim were 1,907.  North America had 3,512 olim in 2011 and 3,389 in 2012.  The UK had 560 in 2011 and 698 in 2012.

The census now shows that there are 6 million Jews and 1.7 million Arabs living in Israel.  As conditions have become worse towards Jews in France and Sweden with much anti-Semitism, they have been forced to move to Israel. About 3 years after we arrived, Ethiopians were coming to Safed.

                                                               Ethiopian immigrant

6.  The Lost 10 Tribes of Israel:-taken by Assyria 721 BCE and Babylon 597-586 BCE
     a. Returning from Ethiopia
     b. Africa-Masai
    c. Asia-Myanmar(Burma), Bnei Israel from Bombay, India, Bnei Menashe of India
    d. Middle East, Mashadi of Mashad, Iran

In integrating Jews from 2 separate cultures from the East (Sephardis, Mizrachim) and from the West (Ashkenazis) ,  we find that the  half of the immigrants that came from Muslim countries in North Africa and Asia had to live in poverty and  the basic values were those of a traditional and authoritarian society similar to the Muslim country they had left.  Most had very large families.

The other half came from European and American countries where the basic values were of a modern democratic and technological society.   This caused a cultural gap which gave immigrants from the developed countries an advantage over the Jews from the Muslim countries so the administration had to be devoted to narrowing this gap.

Education has been the means to do this.  Only 13% of children in 1956 from Asia and Africa attended high school  but by 1969-1970 there were 44% attending.  At the same time, children from Europe and America had 41% attending in 1956 and this went up to 77% by 1969-1970.   By 1970, 18.5% of marriages taking place were of mixed cultural origins.  In other words, the means to even out the disparity was through marriage.  It has increased since then.  Another means is through serving in the IDF.  It has erased differences in sex and in origins.  A Jew is just a Jew today in Israel, back to the way we were before 70 CE.  No differences.

The big population centers in Israel were in the coastal regions between Tel Aviv and Haifa.  New towns and development centers have been built.  This is where many of the immigrants have settled.  They have gone to Eilat, Dimona and Arad in the Negev; Kiryat Gat, Ashkelon and Beit Shemesh in the center;  and Karmiel which is almost all American and Kiryat Sh'mona in the Galilee.  I settled in Safed which is also in the Galilee simply because it reminded me of Oregon with all the fir trees and because it was higher up.  We went where jobs were available.  Being a teacher, I found that Jerusalem, which is a highly desirous city to live in, was already full of teachers and a more expensive place to live.  Teachers were wanted in development towns.  Israel managed to send Russians to the desert and Ethiopians to Safed where it was very cold, but they had to consider where available housing was at that time of immigration.  It gave us lots to laugh about.  Russians preferred to be in Tel Aviv where culture was at the height with music and theater.  We all had our preferences.

It is important to Israel to reclaim Jews who have been found to be still practicing Jewish  beliefs after all these years of separation.  They have been studied by rabbis and even have taken dna tests for their proof.  Through one or both of these tests, they have been accepted as one of our Lost brothers' descendants.  This has been prophesied in the Torah to happen at the end of days.  It's very exciting to us to find that many are still living and claiming their proud connection to the rest of us.  To me, they have gone through much pain to continue their heritage.

National Prayer Breakfast:Muslim Brotherhood Present; Where's the Rabbi?

Nadene Goldfoot
The National Prayer Breakfast  that is held every year at this time is run by a conservative Christian group,  "The Fellowship"  on February 7th.   About 3,500 guests were hosted by Congress.  It was held at the Hilton Washington International Ballroom in Washington DC.  The cost was $725 per person.  Surely at that price, our deficits could have been covered.

The main speaker in this year's National Prayer Breakfast  (61st Annual NPB) was  "Dr. Ben Carson, author, neurosurgeon and the Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at  John Hopkins Hospital".  He had an outstanding speech.  A black man himself,   Carson commented on several social and fiscal issues including political correctness, education, the national debt, health care and taxation. On political correctness,  Carson remarked: "The PC [Politically Correct] Police are out in force at all times ... We have to get over this sensitivity.  Some people thought he should apologize to Obama.  "The speech was magnified because Carson's views were generally interpreted to be conservative, and President Barack Obama was sitting ten feet away."

Senior Senator Chuck Schumer, Democrat from New York, read from Isaiah 55:6-13.  It includes ....I will make an eternal covenant with you, the enduring kindnesses promised to David.."Schumer was born in Brooklyn, the son of Selma (née Rosen) and Abraham Schumer.  His family was Jewish,  descended from immigrants from Russia,  Poland, and Austria."  .

Another attendee there  was Sayyid Syeed, the interfaith liaison for the Islamic Society of North America.  In 2006 he had said that their job was to change the constitution of America.  Believing that, why did he attend?  This group is part of the Muslim Brotherhood, once outlawed in Egypt but now the party of Morsi who John Kerry just gave millions of dollars to with the promise of more. The Muslim Brotherhood and Morsi were assisted by the USA and continue to do so at the expense of those moderates in Egypt who are against it.   Yet back in 2007, our government said that ISNA was an unindicted co-conspirator in the terrorism-financing trial of the Holy Land Foundation which was listed as a US Muslim Brotherhood entity.  The waters have certainly become muddy.

Syeed and ISNA were invited to this breakfast where President Obama spoke.  Syeed also addressed about 100 evangelical leaders during the Middle East/North Africa Prayer Breakfast.  Dr. Mohamed Elsanousi, ISNA's Director of Community Outreach spoke there.

Another speaker was Rep. Louis Gohmert, Republican from Texas who was a congressman who wrote letters asking for investigations into the relationships between ISNA and other Brotherhood legacy groups and the US government.

After the breakfast, Syeed spoke again as the keynote speaker in Minnesota, attended by over 700 faith community leaders including the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Islamic Center of Minnesota.  Syeed then spoke at the U of St. Thomas's Muslim Christian Dialogue Center.

Syeed's preaching is echoed by Muzammil Siddiqi, part of the ISNA's board of directors.  He speaks in support of the long-term implementation of Sharia Law.  His statements included in 2001 that Muslims should participate in the democratic system to safeguard their interest and to try to bring gradual change for the right cause, the cause of truth and justice.   Why then are they wanting a change when our causes for our country should be for truth and justice?  It is that their cause for truth and justice is for their own causes which are different, like being against Israel?   He added that they must not forget that Allah's rules have to be established in all lands, and all their efforts should lead to that direction.  In other words, they are trying to establish Sharia law in our country and do away with our laws.

This happens to be a part of the Muslim Brotherhood's doctrine of gradualism.  It's a phased approach to implement Sharia-based governing.

Yousef al-Qaradawi, on the list as a terrorist and main religious leader of the Muslim Brotherhood,  preaches on al-Jazeera.   "What I am for is a genuine type of democracy, for a society driven by the laws of Sharia that is compatible with the values of freedom, human rights, justice and equity." he tells people.   This is only for Muslims, though.    Other people are called dhimmis, or 2nd class citizens.  Besides many discomforts, they have to pay more taxes than Muslims.  It doesn't include Jews as they are to all be slaughtered.

It is a great achievement for ISNA to be present at the National Prayer Breakfast and most likely feels it has achieved "the art of coalitions."   Let's be honest.  ISNA is planning on turning the USA into an Islamic country.  They've already worked their way into the White House.  The USA should be a country for all religions, but not when one is planning a takeover.  So far, Christianity is still the majority religion here.  For how long?

Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood Head's Wild Proposal to Israeli Jews

Nadene Goldfoot
A 58 year old  physician  known for his Sufi's  tendency (lover of the truth) named Essam el-Erian is vice president of the Justice and Freedom Party of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, a country with a population of 79,089,650+.  This shlemiel (foolish person)  has come up with a way to solve the Brotherhood's  Jewish problem.  During a 2012  interview on Egypt's Dream TV, he said that he wants all former Egyptian Jews and their descendants  to move out of Israel to make way for the Palestinians, so here's what he has proposed, on his own efforts, mind you.

He wants them all to come back to live in Egypt as 2nd class citizens or dhimmi, of course.(Never mind that a 25 year old in 1948 would be 90 years old today.)   They would live under Sharia law and being dhimmis, would have to pay an extra special tax just like non-Muslims did in the Ottoman Empire that ended with the end of WWI in 1918. Erian stated that although his party was against Zionism, it was not against the Jews, stating that "they have a complicated history, but the Jewish motherland is not Israel" The Ottomans were on the side of the Germans, so lost the war.  Erian  blamed former leader Gamal Abdel Nasser for all the Jews leaving Egypt.  In 1948 there were 75,000 Jews living in Egypt.  By 2004 there were less than 100.

Not only Egyptian Jews, but all Jews living in Israel should go back to their home of origin, whether it be Poland or the USA.  He doesn't even know that we have always had a Jewish presence in Palestine before 1948 ever since many  were forced to leave in 70 CE.

The come-on to this ridiculous proposal was that he would return their wealth.  Only a few hours after his statement, he spurred one of the groups representing former Egyptian Jews who were going to put in a claim of 30 billion dollars.  In 1948, most all the Muslim states expelled the Jews after hearing of Israel's creation.  They were homeless and could not take any of their property or money, and of course they then made aliyah to Israel-quickly.

The other Egyptian political officials, lawyers and the media  were in an uproar over this offer as well as the idea of it so that Erian had to resign his position as adviser to President Morsi 4 days ago.  .  Some of the protesters, and this shows how opposite their thinking is from the West, said that Erian acted to curry favor with the USA and with the Zionist lobby (AIPAC).  There is nothing in his proposal to curry anyone's favor.  It was an improvement over the religious leaders putting a fatwa out to kill us all, as many have already done, but he's being a lufmench (impractical fellow) to dream this idea up.

There were realists in the crowd who pointed out that Jews had been forced to leave because of attacks from the Brotherhood (Brotherhood started in 1930's and had pogroms against Jews in Cairo in 1940's).   The 8,000 Jews of Egypt  had to abandon their wealth as well.  They thought the government would have to come to term with with facts sometime but not now.  Another pointed out the fact (they were taking this very seriously) that they would be killed because of Sharia Law commanding that they be killed.

Erian, carrying deep seated hostility in his heart and  in trying to come up with a solution to the Palestinian-Israel problem, was sued by a lawyer for harming the country's security and causing panic.  Morsi wasn't perturbed.  He said that Erian voiced his own opinion and he just didn't share it but the media storm rages on.

The Muslim Brotherhood has had it in for the Jews ever since 1928.  They published Mein Kampf in Arabic and called it "My Jihad"  Sayed Qutub's book was titled, "My fight Against the Jews." which is only one of many reviling Jews. " In April 2001, columnist Ahmed Ragheb lamented Hitler's failure to finish the job of annihilating the Jews."

Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood party  has the media being openly anti-Semitic.  The fact is that there are almost no Jews left in the country.  If there are, they are extremely old people.  Clerics rant daily against Jews. They all think Israel will fall within 10 years.  Morsi has said many things backing this belief, like when he told Al Quds TV that "The Zionists have no right to the land of Palestine and there is no place for them on that land.  We must confront that Zionist entity.  All ties of all kinds must be severed," he added.

This is what the Muslim Brotherhood has brought on.  We've had 39 years of peace between Egypt and Israel since our last war which was in October 1973.   Sadat came to Israel in 1977 to speak.  When Egypt and Syria attacked  in 1973 on our holiest day of Yom Kippur, we were unprepared as everyone was in a synagogue. Israel pulled together quickly though,  and the IDF got as far as 100 kilometers from Cairo and in turn shook up the Egyptians; but in all we lost 2,688 soldiers, the worst war since 1948.    .

Sadat interpreted the Koran in a different way from today's radicals.  He said, "I quote the following verses from the holy Koran:
"We believe in God and in what has been revealed to us and what was revealed to Abraham, Ismail, Isaac, Jacob, and the tribes and in the books given to Moses, Jesus, and the prophets from their lord. We make no distinction between one and another among them and to God we submit."
